Pycxml compatability #133

This PR add pycxml compatibility and adds in some small bugfixes.

@wcarthur this is what I used for the ensemble work but I forgot to put it in a PR! 🤦

@wcarthur woops I need to fix that pycxml dependency issue - I'll make it optional for now
