Drill Dozer always freezing on Area 4 #203

Open catzopss opened 2 years ago

catzopss commented 2 years ago

playing drill dozer on DSI, and it always freezes at the same point on the first level of Area 4, the first time you have to crouch and blast your way under a very low ledge in that level. i tried every combo of disabling or enabling the GBArunner2 settings (like WRM cache or whatever it is called) and nothing worked. eventually had to find some one elses save file so I could skip the level

This is esp frustrating because the game has a 10/10 compatibility rating on GBArunner2, with no reported issues

I can see why it would be frustrating when it's reported as being perfect on the wiki. However, most of the tested games have not been played from start to finish, because that would be impossible to do for just a few people. That's why it's important and helpful that people like you give feedback. If there's is a quick way to reproduce the issue you're experiencing then it would be helpful if you explained what steps to take and if possible attach a save file as close to the point as possible. The region and version of the rom would be helpful too, especially if you end up giving a save. Don't upload the rom itself since that is prohibited.

Having said that, my first tip would be to try the hicode build for the DSi as explained in the wiki:

https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/GBARunner2/DSi_3DS_Compatibility_List#Increased_ROMhack_Support_on_3DS_and_DSi_and_Increased_DSi_Compatibility_.28Hicode.29

Please check the main wiki page for how to use different builds of gbarunner2 and other general use questions you might have.

hi!

I can provide my save file no problem. How do you want me to provide it? Is there a way to add it to my GitHub issue submission or should I email it or what?

as for repro steps, it's just a normal playthrough of the level. I can provide a screenshot of where the exact place is that the freeze always happens though. Even a video of it freezing if that'll help too.

Hi, As I said wrote earlier your first step should be to try the hicode build that I linked to.

If you still get this issue after trying that then if you don't mind, it would be nice if you could post your save file with the reproducing steps. Files can be attached to comments here.

hi

unfortunately I can't try other builds because this isn't my DSi that im using to play and I think the owner probably wouldnt appreciate me messing around with that kind of thing. But I can post the save file and stuff on the GitHub thread in case it'll help someone trying to repro the problem

here's my save file and a link to a video of the freezing bug. As for repro steps, it's just a normal playthrough of Area 4-1 'Metal City'. you inevitably get to the place where the bug happens, its not a missable area.

also, funnily enough, i think i just found another freezing bug as i was filming that first video. it seems that if you don't press any button at the screen before the main menu screen for a while, it goes to some footage of the game being played but always freezes after a second or two and then no button presses register. i tried it several times and it happened each time.

here's some video of it too: https://streamable.com/x1uhl9

Thanks! It seems the other way you found for it to freeze is a lot easier and quicker to reproduce and I suspect that both of these are related and could be fixed the same way.

I forgot to ask how you are running gbarunner2. Is it through a flashcard that you have inserted into the gamecard slot of the dsi or through the SD card on the side of your DSi?

catzopss commented 2 years ago

i'm running it via twilightmenu on a normal sd card

I see. Could you please write what is written under commit hash (only the first 5 symbols from the left are necessary), branch and version in the "About gbarunner2" screen in the in-game menu you find near the other gbarunner2 settings?

catzopss commented 2 years ago

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I can't select commit hash and see any more info, and underneath it in the same menu there is just 'Branch', 'DLDI Cpu - ARM 7' and 'Version - DSi'

At least I can tell that you're using the DSi version. I believe there might be a way to Switch to the DS version through the twilightmenu++ settings, but I'm not really sure. You should check its wiki to see if there's any way. This sometimes works for some games.

There might be several reasons for why the game crashes for you but if you cannot switch to another version already on your sd card then you're stuck since all other possible solutions entail transferring stuff to the sd card.
