Computer Spec #94

Open Grizzly-Adam opened 6 years ago

Grizzly-Adam commented 6 years ago

I would like to develop a spec sheet for each computer we have so it will be clearer what features each should have.

Some of it seems pretty odd to me-- for instance the pentium 3 requires a boot disk?? Pretty much anything 286 and after didnt need a boot disk. And the WarPC looks Z80 or 8088 based-- that should be the one that needs a boot disk.

So what real life computer is each computer based on? Tell me that and I will get us some documentation made up and I can assigb default themes, etc.

bell07 commented 6 years ago

Great and long missed! :+1:

The Pentium3 requres boot disk because I enabled them for tech-demo reasons. There is no concept, the specs are really overdued. I see the next attributes in the spec

Please add "planed" attributes to the spec too, for further development.

The second spec we need is according items, floppy, usb and #84 . What should the laptops be able with the items?

Grizzly-Adam commented 6 years ago

OK here are my guesses for the included computers:

Pentium 3 -- Looks like IBM AT, not a Pentium 3 Fruit Zero -- iMac? Bell CrossOver -- Circa 1998 Desktop Cube PC -- Looks like Macintosh II or Amiga 4000 CP Core-- Macbook?? Laptop v.2 -- IBM Thinkpad 750C, maybe 390 @Gerold55 am I close?

Gerold55 commented 6 years ago

Fruit Zero is based off of an iMac Cube PC was based off of an old desktop and the neXTcube desktop I'm not completely sure of the others because CrossZover and I had just designed a bunch of PCs Now the computers in PCPack1 are based on real life PCs

Gerold55 commented 6 years ago

The Bell Crossover (name came from Bell07 and Crossover's combination dedication to them for the help) is based on more of a Dell type of desktop.

Grizzly-Adam commented 6 years ago

I got t he low down on everything in the PC pack, they all seem to be real except the WAR 5000, which is computer he imagines on a battleship. It looks like a cross between a Commodore PET and a TRS-80, so it will be treated accordingly. I will just assign specs to the others were aren't sure of to try and balance the lineup. I will let you know what I come up with.

Gerold55 commented 6 years ago

Ok just apply the specs to the PCs from the computers that they look like they are and it all should be fine 👍

Nice list. Now we need a way to map attributes to laptop mod implementation oO. Which capabilities should have the hardware in minetest?

Grizzly-Adam commented 6 years ago

That's what I am thinking about too. I still have five computers to get spec for, then I can boil stuff down a little more once I have the full picture.

Grizzly-Adam commented 6 years ago

All computers are on list. I will boil these down into some classes in a bit. It would be nice if we could make the older computers without HDD and make the HDD installable. Maybe you have to buy the upgrade on the proposed on-line shop. Maybe handle modems and networking cards the same way? Even do RAM upgrades to allow more apps to run.

bell07 commented 6 years ago

Nice ideas !

It would be nice if we could make the older computers without HDD and make the HDD installable.

Depends on #84 basically the HDD is bootable removable in this case (Did you tried the live-boot already? The removeable is "system storage" in this case

Maybe you have to buy the upgrade on the proposed on-line shop.

I like more the "crafting" to obtain items. Usually it is not possible to get "real" things from computer "directly"

Maybe handle modems and networking cards the same way?

Removable item with Network card capability hm, we need a new removable type "Internal bus" (like PCI in RL) that allow to add capabilities that is not implemented by default.

Even do RAM upgrades to allow more apps to run.

That is unclear. There is allways 1 app active. Nothing have any sizes (eg. full system backup or just a text file does no mater)

Grizzly-Adam commented 6 years ago

But maybe a certain app requires more RAM than another. Or theme! Maybe that's how we control how modern some of the PCs seem.

bell07 commented 6 years ago

Then we need a "Size" attribute at all apps, themes and files. Files are currently not implemented.

I do not like the idea to get all full realistic (like add cables to emulate LAN) or even file sizes. The computer s should be functional and usable rational.

Grizzly-Adam commented 6 years ago

We will be having CS-BOS coming out soon. We need to get Pentium III renamed, and Laptop 2.0 should be renaned too. My suggestions:

Kodiak 1000 for the pentium Portable Workstation for laptoo.

bell07 commented 6 years ago

I see your renames and I like it! Do we need Aliases to the previous name to avoid "unknown nodes" in worlds with computers from previous version?
