I intentionally didn't make this a requirement from the start, to make the process of RSVP'ing for an event fewer steps. Do you think this should be restricted site-wide, or allow teams to choose? If the later, which should be the default?
I think it should be up to the teams to decide, but with the default being members only, to keep parity with sites like Meetup. That way those who want a more open event can have that option.
That said I'm not sure where the best place to put this is. Perhaps having it on the event page itself?

An option checkbox to "Join Team" when RSVP'ing would keep the fewer steps, yet allow teams to choose to be member only or open, without giving non members a "Members Only" error message, where they have to go back and join. Let them tick the box and continue.
I've noticed on several events that folks can RSVP without being a member of the group. I don't think that should be allowed (IIRC sites like Meetup require you to be a member of the group before attending events. This way if an administrator rejects a user from a group then they're banned from future events).
