This PR improves the "Installation" and "Initial setup" sections of the README. See individual commit messages for details on the changes.

Note: This PR should not be merged until 1.27.0 is out, because the current release does not include the .pkg installer mentioned in the "Installation" section. This is why it's in draft mode.
