A good source of data: OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development). Cons: manual selection (or automated!) of EU countries. Also: Eurostat website. Cons: clunky db interface. However, this dashboard is rather nifty, and may be just the right thing for econ-related data. Country Facts also looks interesting for comparing countries side by side.
Bar graph: length of maternal leave (maybe?); alcohol consumption (?)... Line graph: GDP, unemployment rate, population, inflation rate...
Map: main user interaction.
Which other graphs may be needed? Scatter plots may be helpful for country-specific metrics (maybe).
For example:
Common metrics:
happiness index;
parental leave length;
population/ rate of birth;
GDP;
alcohol consumption;
no. of official languages.
5 individual facts.
