It has been set to 0 from the beginning.

you wouldn't happen to be trying to use x360ce app with the 64bit dll?

No. I've tried that too with another game, but I definitively use x86 version.
I've mostly experimented with Sine mora (editing manually the ini file), where
it sometimes works, more often works badly.
When I first started experimenting with the program, it would start, although I
suspect that not all of its functions worked properly (e.g. some entries would
sometimes be green, some buttons on the controller image too, but nothing I did
would change that). It would find the profile on Internet, I could edit it,
save it, start the program again. Now it just crashes, unless I start with a
new .ini, in which case it usually works until I exit and start it again, but
sometimes it also crashes while loading the profile from Internet.

I've just tried starting it with no profile file, e.g. I allowed it to create a
new one, but choose not to download the profile. After I saved this blank .ini,
I exited the program and started it again. Crashed.

Deleting x360ce.tmp make any change?

I noticed at first two or three crashes that the program would start if I
deleted it, so I usually delete it before attempting to start it, but it
doesn't help anymore. I managed to start it once today without deleting it
(this was actually the first time it started today with the profile), but
subsequently it crashed several times in row.

I've updated to the latest .dll. At first few attempts I could start the .exe,
then it started crashing more and more often, and now it crashes all the time.
I also get the following message whenever either a game or x360ce.exe is
started (before crashing), even if I let it create ini from scratch:
Configuration file does not match x360ce version.
Some options may not work until configuration file will be updated.

One more update: I've found that if I wait a couple of minutes between
attempts, I have a better chance of x360ce not crashing, but no guarantee that
it will be so. I've experienced the similar behaviour in case of the issue 427.

I've tested it. Much better, but the problem persists ~20% of times.
(The green indicators are still erratic, although they are also much better
behaved.)

And, yes, the error message "Configuration file does not match x360ce version.
Some options may not work until configuration file will be updated." remains
present at each start of the application. Note that when the crash comes, it
comes only after clicking OK to that message.

To bypass the "Configuration file does not match x360ce version" problem
everytime you start the x360ce application, under [Options] put this:
Version=1
For me it also solved the crash problem which was somewhat unexpected. However
every time you start the application you'll have to reconfigure everything, so
make a proper save under the Settings Database.
After all this, the games worked fine on my end, really. Even Risen 2 has
started working with it.
Oh, and it's not necessary to re-open the application once it's done and
configured at least once BEFORE you start any game.

This guy on Steam community noticed that it used to work with the previous
version of x360ce, so I tried and it worked for me, as for lot of people I've
seen on the topic.
