Bring this project up-to-date again and bring out 1.0 version

updated dependencies
Addressed main bugs
Working ci for at least win and mac

concrete:

[x] make it work with python3.8

- [x] Windows ~~- [ ] check out bugs and solve~~ ~~- [ ] implement CD (and README)~~
[x] change readme build instructions

currently holding back: the downloaded zip does not seem to work on mac 10.15.6. the OS raises a warning that it is broken, probably due to the executable not being signed. the workaround proposed online do not seem to solve this.

decided to skip 10.15 support now, since github actions no longer support this OS. testing on mac os 11 seems to work
