Comment: Re “... alleviating the need for the user to handle multiple physical devices.” - Does this mean the user physically moves the UICC between multiple mobile phones? This is not a common usage model today.

No, what is meant is that mobile with payment applet in UICC (=one packaged device) may replace mobile + credit/debit card (=2 devices)
