Task Description

1. Choose a Topic

Select a topic that is familiar to you and that you understand well. You cannot work on a topic like a hotel reservation system unless you've worked in a hotel, for example. It is recommended to focus on areas you are involved with in your free time (e.g., sports, scouting leadership, etc.) or through work (e.g., part-time jobs, family businesses). Suitable topics are web applications with various functionalities and user interfaces. Avoid optimization tasks that only process existing data.

2. Project Vision

Develop the vision for your project. Normally, a vision would be written as a document, but since the vision will be presented in the second week of exercises, prepare it as a presentation with no more than 8 slides.

3. Video Presentation

Create a video presentation that includes both the slides and spoken commentary.

4. Common Mistakes

  1. Insufficient specification of project benefits: Make sure to clearly explain why the project should be developed.
  2. Inadequate financial analysis:
    • Estimates should include pessimistic, realistic, and optimistic variants.
    • You must provide a cost estimate for at least the next 5 years (with a calculation explaining the figures).
    • Estimate the financial returns for at least the next 5 years (with the relevant calculations).
    • For non-profit projects, estimate the required working hours, necessary financial costs, and measurable project benefits. Estimates may have a tolerance of +/- 100%, but figures must not be wildly inaccurate.
    • If you are planning revenue from ads, base your estimates on realistic data (e.g., estimated number of users, daily ad clicks, reward per click, etc.).
  3. Lack of countermeasures for risks: For each identified risk, provide specific countermeasures.
  4. Risks are too generic: Avoid listing risks that apply to almost any project (e.g., missed deadlines, team member drops out).

5. Vision Content Recommendations

  1. Project Overview: Main purpose and motivation for the project.
  2. Stakeholders: Identify all key individuals and institutions involved.
  3. Business Objectives:
    • Use the template: As a , I need , because .
    • Example (context: KOS CTU):
      • As an opponent of a bachelor's thesis, I need to be informed that the student has submitted their thesis (and the deadline for submitting my review) because if I don't know that I need to write a review by a certain deadline, there's a high chance I won't submit it on time, potentially harming the student’s preparation or ability to respond to my feedback.
  4. Key Business Events:
    • Describe important events from the perspective of stakeholders/users.
    • Use past tense formulations.
    • The events don't need to be in chronological order as they may describe alternative outcomes.
    • Example (context: KOS CTU - Bachelor Thesis submission and defense):
      • The thesis was submitted.
      • The opponent was informed about the latest possible deadline for the review.
      • The supervisor was informed about the latest possible deadline for the review.
      • The study officer was informed that the thesis was submitted by the student.
      • The opponent’s review was uploaded.
      • The student was informed about the uploaded opponent’s review.
      • The supervisor’s review was uploaded.
      • The student was informed about the uploaded supervisor’s review.
      • The student registered for the final state exam.
      • A teacher was assigned to the state exam commission.
      • The teacher was informed about being assigned to the state exam commission.
      • The teacher was removed from the state exam commission.
      • The teacher was informed about being removed from the state exam commission.
      • The student defended the final thesis.
      • The student passed the final state exam.
      • The student did not defend the final thesis.
      • The student did not pass the final state exam.
  5. Key Risks:
    • Highlight critical project events or situations that could have a significant impact on achieving project goals. For each risk, include countermeasures and explain why this is a critical risk rather than a general risk that applies to all projects.
  6. Financial Estimates:
    • Provide estimates for material costs (e.g., machines, equipment), intangible costs (e.g., licenses, operations), and human resources (in terms of person-hours with an average hourly rate). Revenue estimates should be substantiated.

6. Submission

Submit your task according to the instructions on Moodle:

The final video presentation should be submitted as a reply to the initial post from the instructor in the relevant exercise discussion forum. Ensure that the video format is compatible with standard web browsers.

7. Evaluating Peers' Projects

Submit evaluations of your colleagues' visions no later than 24 hours before the second exercise. Your instructor will inform you of the evaluation method via email.
