When I was first trying this extension out, I found some of the default behaviour made it less enjoyable to use compared to FancyZones.
I found that this extension has a settings panel, but I was only able to access it by installing gnome-shell-extension-manager.
A similar extension (Forge) has an option when you click the panel icon to go directly to the extension settings dialog. That would be a great addition to this extension.
In case anyone else finds this, these are the changes I made to make this extension act almost exactly like FanzyZones:
I disabled Show tabs
I enabled Hold CTRL to snap windows
Thanks!
Here's the original issue I created, before I found the settings dialog:
The stated purpose of this extension is to "work like FancyZones", but I noticed it has some key differences from FancyZones that make it less enjoyable to use:
FancyZones doesn't put tabs at the top of the zone when there are multiple windows in a zone. I prefer this behaviour because the tabs take up real estate and can block UI elements. Is there a way to disable them? There are many other existing ways to switch between windows.
FancyZones doesn't put windows in zones by default; you have to hold down a hotkey (the default is Shift) while dragging to put Windows in zones. Once again I prefer the FancyZones behaviour because for smaller windows that I'm interacting with, I may just want to move it to the side without expanding it to fill an entire zone.
Related to the previous point, this extension will automatically put any new window that pops up into a zone, causing it to fill the entire space of the zone. This behaviour is undesirable for a simple popup window that I need to interact with briefly, e.g. a password prompt. These windows are meant to be small, and by forcing them to fill an entire zone, the UI elements are spread out and not where I expect them to be.
Of course these are all a matter of opinion; ideally they'd be configurable so users can choose the behaviour they prefer. Can any of these be configured to make them more like FanzyZones? I don't really see a way to change anything in the extension other than the layout of the zones.
