Switching between main display and alternate writings for vocabulary #78

I'd like to see a feature that lets the user switch out main display of a word with an alternative writing. Or at least a way to disambiguate a word that has several alternate writings and meanings, but share the same data page.

As an example for reference is the vocabulary item 「けっこう」which has its main display in hiragana. It is, more often than not, used in its kanji form 「結構」. Drilling this word through the vocabulary trainer is kind of hopeless, at least in terms of recognition.

Another example is 「現す」 and 「現れる」, which have 「表す」 and 「表れる」as their alternate writing. While they both share the same general meaning, there are active/passive nuances that makes them differ.

I've got plenty more of these, but you get the point.

If this doesn't prove possible to implement, is there a way for me to manually edit/compile the jmdict to disambiguate entries without having to learn programming?

Hi,

That seems to be a perfectly legit request indeed. Would showing the alternate writings along with the main writing) in the vocabulary trainer be enough?

Hi,

That would surely be in the right direction for me. This way we can get all writings on the queued item in the trainer.

Yes. Just having the option to turn on alternate writing along with main display during training would help!

Just as a curiosity though, this nesting together words and writings that are similar; Is it perhaps something that is inherited from the JMDict? I'm only familiar with EDICT and I remember the entries of it all were separate from each other.

Thank you for looking into this. Tagaini is such an indispensable tool.

Yes, JMdict groups all the different writings under the same entry, contrary to Edict. Implementing the feature as I explained should not be difficult, this will hopefully make it for the next release.

Can you include the alternate writings when exporting words into a TSV?

I often convert the words I study from Tagaini into flashcards for Anki, so I'd like to see the alternate writings on those flashcards.
