v1.0 of the updater, which crashes tf2, can still grab the latest hud #75

Can you describe the problem?

What steps will reproduce it?
1. Install v1.0 of the updater.
2. Check for hud updates.
3. Install into ...\Team Fortress 2\tf, or ...\Team Fortress 2\tf\custom\eve
hud\

What's your installation path? C:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Team Fortress 2

Where do you run the Updater from? C:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Team Fortress
2\HUD Updater

What system do you use? Windows 7 SP1 x64

Please provide any additional information below.

If you try to install eve hud into a custom folder by hand not all of the files
work and it is broken. TF2 at least runs though.

It would be nice if the old updater was no longer able to download the latest
hud updates, so the user would go looking for the new updater that works
properly. Even better if the old updater can somehow display a message to the
user telling them to update.

I noticed the new updater has an option to self-update. I don't think 1.0 has
that, does it? So this important (I was on 1.0 until today).

All of this is this but I can't go back and change it now, can I?

Well there are surely options... I was thinking changing the download url to
make the existing one fail, and pushing out a 1.3.1 updater with the new url.

But there may be other options, this way would disrupt anyone using 1.3 without
automatic launcher updates...

I can't change the download url.

Besides, if someone missed all notifications that I posted here, on the steam
group and on the steam forums then I guess it's their own fault :P

I never saw any. I'm not a member of the steam group (I didn't know there was
one), I don't go to the steam forums (why, when I could do better: NOT go to
the steam forums EVER!), and why would I come here when the updater is supposed
to keep me updated?

I thought the HUD was just broken due to Steam Pipe (I noticed there was a 3.00
update but figured it was unrelated since it broke TF2 when I updated). So I
waited until it was fixed which was taking an awful while.

It was only when 3.03 completed failed to fix the crashing issue that I decided
to Google around for info, and found nothing useful.

I finally found this project, and I still didn't notice any indication that I
needed a new updater. I ended up checking the updater version number, noticing
I was out of date, and then updating it. I wasn't even sure that was a fix for
the problem until I hit install and checked the filesystem and noticed it was
creating a \custom\ subfolder.

And I'm checking and I don't see any notifications here.

The steam group similarly makes no mention of this issue or that the new
launcher fixes it. In fact, one of the top comments has a piece of
DISINFORMATION indicating you have to create the \custom\ subfolder by hand
(likely from someone who isn't using the new updater).

Better late than never. Old versions of the Updater (<1.6) can no longer
download the hud.

Can I close this issue or would like to add something?
