Good Labels!!!
Why is there no likes in here? Those labels are piss funny.
I am of the opinion that instant chat has no place on a forum. It takes away from content generation which is the bread and butter traffic creator on the site.
PMs are fine imho. The last chat was barely used bar a few cockings and a few late night chinwags.
The xenforo seems to handle pm better than vb anyway. Its much more streamlined and akin to faceache conversation.
Chat is not needed and is just one more thing to go wrong and bloat bandwidth.
My tuppence
Three cheers for Pebble015!
Anyone else agree?
I've not used chat, so it doesn't bother me one way or the other. Ref conversations I posted on the site that with being able to invite 50 users into the conversation it could take traffic away from the main site.
As above. The features are there with conversations already but better, no need for a chat plugin.
Motion to put chat to bed.
Anyone second?
Unfortunately chat has been extremely popular historically with site users and will definitely come up again when we launch this. I also don't buy the argument that it detracts from the main site and in fact believe the opposite. In the chat heyday it kept people online for vast periods of time, coincidentally this was also when ARRSE was at its busiest. For me this makes it a must have provided it doesn't create security or performance issues.
Would it be worth considering a trail with the built in pm/conversation feature where there is the option to add others to it.
A chatroom may work but will need to be tested, the last one was pants.
Are we getting wires crossed with chatroom and the recent chatbar/IM?
Pebs, the old chatroom from around 4-5 years ago was very popular, some nights saw around 30 users chatting in real time, plus there was other users from different time zones logging in throughout the night. It will deffo be asked for when Future ARRSE goes live.
I have bought Taigachat Pro, but have yet to receive the files. I think it's best we do this straight away so that we can test in this nice sensible environment and not somewhere which the Snail has access to!
Hahaha, best not to get her involved at this point. On 31 Dec 2013 12:40, "Good-CO" notifications@github.com wrote:

Haha.
Somebody gave her my phone number so I get random 4am dribblings even when I'm offline. There is no escape.
Give us a shout when its up and running GCO
Pebs, do what I did, just let her ring, take it into the bog and let her think that she rang you while you were busy, she soon lets go :-) On 31 Dec 2013 12:46, "Pebbles015" notifications@github.com wrote:

Never used chat and as Pebbles said, most of it's functions are covered by the conversations/PM feature.
Given the lack of interest in the chat bar, which did have both one to one chat and a chatroom, I am dubious about the value of chat. I'm not convinced that chat had a significant impact on the overall site traffic, and traffic during the last month (long after the removal of the chat bar) was significantly higher than the same period in 2009 and 2010 (the great heyday of chat with the Flashchat software) so it can't really be claimed that everything has fallen away because we have no chat. I suppose you could say "we'd be even busier if we had chat", but I don't know what you could base that on.
There were a good number of regular chat users, and they were in general some of the most dedicated, so do accept that there is an argument for chat on their behalf, if not for some greater site success. My very optimistic guess would be that we are talking about perhaps 20 hard core, 50 regular, and 100 more-than-occasionals, so significant, if only a small % of overall users (a few thousand 'active' members at any time plus vast numbers of guests)
Still no answer from the chat software bloke, but if I do hear today I will try to get it installed in time for FAT Happy New Year messages
Installed!
