I don't know if this will help but ..I had the same problem and all I did was
right click on the Google Gadget application and said to add to startup
programes.

I met the same case.
I found that there would be a socket file ~/.google/gadgets/ggl-host-socket not
removed, if GGL wasn't closed manually. then this file will block other GGL
starting attempts.
In order to start GGL, I have to remove the file manually.
I suspect GGL is using ~/.google/gadgets/ggl-host-socket to do process
single-instance checking.
Due the problem I met, GGL may have to be improved for this single-install
checking. Recording a process id file may be a good choice.
