This extension just provides the buttons in the menu and the ability to map them to commands that can be executed by VS Code. Commands can include built-in VS Code commands, macros, or tasks. For more information on each of these, check these places:
Built-in commands: Open the command pallete in VS Code and type in: "Commands: Open Keyboard Shortcuts (UI)" Macros extension: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=ctf0.macros An Introduction to Tasks: https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/editor/tasks
For what you are trying to do, a compound task would likely be the most appropriate since you want to run a shell script. The link I provided on tasks has documentation on how to setup a compound task. It takes a little bit of experimenting and reading to learn how to setup the tasks, but once you grasp it it can be a very powerful tool.

I am looking for a simple action of clicking a single button that saves the current file. Then passes the name of the file to a shell script. In this case the shell script compiles the program CPP and if successful runs the program. Can your tool do this? if so can you share how? I am not VS Code expert and I dont have time to be I just want to simplify some basic functions.
Thanks.
