Generic File writing capability

Need to make the ability to write to a file more generic. This way it can be leveraged to do things like record metrics and capture other data without having to duplicate the effort of re-writing this code.

I believe we do need this now…especially since we have recently discussed adding diagnostic logging (for example, to see what the IR sensor is reading at any point in time.
