Like potions, scrolls are fairly easy to manufacture and are also accessible to characters of moderate level. Scrolls come in two varieties: spell scrolls and protection scrolls. Spell scrolls are exactly what the name implies—scrolls that store spells that can be cast simply by being read. Protection scrolls are special single-use magical items that provide defense against a number of threats. While any character may read a protection scroll, wizard and priest scrolls cannot be normally ready by a creature unless the spell in question is on the list of spells available to them. Note that under certain circumstances, thieves, and bards may read spell scrolls that they normally wouldn't be able to read.
Low-level wizards and priests are able to read spells from scrolls that are normally beyond their abilities; even a 1st-level wizard can pronounce the incantation for a fireball or lightning bolt correctly, for example.
If this component is installed, barbarians may not make use of protection scrolls. "While any character except a barbarian may read a protection scroll..."
If this component is installed, creatures are limited by class and spell level of the scroll in question. Specifically, they can only read scrolls of a spell level that they can cast. That is, for example, a first level wizard can only use scrolls containing 1st level mage spells. Similarly, priests can only use scrolls containing 1st level priest spells.
If this component is installed, scrolls cannot be used except by use of a read magic spell. This spell allows a wizard or priest to use as many scrolls as they please for the duration of the spell. "While any character may read a protection scroll without the benefit of a read magic spell, wizard and priest scrolls cannot be normally ready by a creature that cannot cast a spell of that type and level. So, for example, a first level mage can only use scrolls of 1st level, and they cannot use said scroll if it is of a prohibited school. And so on."
If this component is installed, characters can read otherwise unfamiliar scrolls by use of the read magic spell. That is, wizards can read priest scrolls, specialists can read prohibited scrolls, etc. "While any character may read a protection scroll without the benefit of a read magic spell, wizard and priest scrolls cannot be normally ready by a creature without the benefit of a read magic spell (unless the spell in question is on the list of spells available to that creature). "

Wizards may create scrolls when they reach 9th level, while Priests may scribe scrolls when they reach 7th level. Any spell the character knows (or has access to, in the case of a priest) can be placed on a scroll, or the character may attempt to create a protection scroll. If Proficiencies is installed, however, then characters may instead need to have the requisite number of proficiency points in Spellcraft in order to create scrolls (see that mod).
If this component is installed, wizards (but not sorcerers) to scribe scrolls at level 1, priests and sorcerers to scribe scrolls at level 4, bards to scribe scrolls at level 7, and rangers and paladins to scribe scrolls at level 24."
"Wizards (but not sorcerers) may create scrolls at 1st level. Priests and sorcerers can create scrolls at level 4, and bards can create scrolls at level 7. Finally, rangers and paladins can create scrolls at level 24."
If this component is installed, casters can only create scrolls if they have the high level ability Create Scroll.
"Scroll creation is limited to characters that select scroll creation as a High Level Ability.
If this component is installed, you can set an ini to determine when a given class gets access to scroll creation (or if at all).
There is no research required for spell scrolls or for protection scrolls. For example, if a wizard knows how to cast globe of invulnerability, they can write a scroll of protection from magic without performing any kind of research.
If this component is installed, thieves must have access to a scroll of a particular type in order to make more scrolls of that type. They use up that scroll while learning how to create it as a scroll. Bards can also create priest scrolls in this way. "The lone exception is rogues where applicable. A thief must always have access to a scroll to study from before they can recreate scrolls of that type. They use up the scroll in this process. Similarly, Bards can use this method to create priest scrolls."
Scrolls require scroll creation kits. Scroll creation kits come in three varieties: standard, quality, and masterwork. Scroll kits require everything you need to create a scroll included high quality paper, specially-blended ink, and quills for writing. While a standard scroll kit is sufficient to create low level scrolls, higher quality scroll kits are necessary to create higher level scrolls. Scrolls for spells of 1st to 3rd level (Tier I) can be created using a standard scroll creation kit; scrolls for spells of 4th to 6th level (Tier II) requires a quality scroll kit; and scrolls for spells of 7th to 9th level (Tier III) require a masterwork scroll kit. (Use the spell level equivalents noted above for protection scrolls.)
A scroll kit can also be used to create a scroll of a lower tier than is required. In that case, the chance of success is higher. Tier I scrolls gain a +5% bonus if a quality scroll kit is used to create them, and a +10% bonus if a masterwork scroll kit is used to create them. Tier II scrolls gain a +5% bonus to success if a masterwork scroll kit is used to create them.
On the other hand, a character can use a scroll kit of a lower quality to create a scroll of a higher tier, though this imposes a substantial penalty to the chance of success. You suffer a -20% penalty when trying to create Tier III scrolls with a standard scroll kit. This penalty is reduced to -10% if you use a quality scroll kit instead. You receive a -10% penalty when trying to create a Tier II scroll with a standard scroll kit.
Characters can buy these materials at an appropriate vendor or create a scroll kit from scratch (see craft miscellaneous items).
The base chance for a successful scribing is 80%, +1% per character level, -5% per level of the spell being created (or equivalent spell level, in the case of protection scrolls). This Note that a failure will always produce something. See the Table: Failed Scrolls for details. Use at your own risk. Also note that the quality of the materials you are using can further alter the chance of success.
If this component is installed, no component materials are required to create a scroll. However, creation cost is doubled (or stays the same if installed alongside the Experience Cost component).
If this component is installed, characters must burn experience points in order to craft a scroll. This does not lower a character's level even if they no longer have enough experience points for their current level. This does, however, delay advancement to the next level as normal. Scroll cost is eliminated if this component is installed (or stays the same if installed alongside No Material Components).
If this component is installed, scroll creation is automatically successful. In this case, crafting kits cannot be used to create scrolls of a higher tier than they would be able to otherwise.
If this component is installed, a failure to create a scroll does not produce anything except a drain on the character's resources. The character pays full cost for the scroll and burns any materials, but no scroll is created. Install if you like to be frustrated.
If this component is installed, a failure to create a scroll does not produce anything except a drain on the character's resources. The character pays half cost for the scroll and burns any materials, but no scroll is created. Install if you like to be frustrated.

These components deal with the addition of new potions to the game. There are two different 'styles' of potions that can be added: new '2e style' potions, and new '3e style' potions. 3e style potions are potions that directly or indirectly simulate spell-like effects. While they are usually not exact replicas of the spells they simulate, in all cases they are pretty obviously derived from those spells. 2e style potions, on the other hand, typically have their own unique effects. In many instances, these effects can be similar to certain spells. The reason for the split here is aesthetic, in case any players would rather not mix editions too much.
This component adds a number of potions of both 'styles' to the game, and these potions will be distributed for looting and purchase throughout the game. These potions will be craftable if potion brewing is installed.
If this component is installed, a number of 2e style potions will be added to the game (and be craftable if potion crafting is installed). 3e style potions will not be added into the game in any capacity. Only 2e style potions will be found in game (though this mod will add many more), and characters can only create 2e style potions.
If this component is installed, a number of 3e style potions will be added to the game, and made available as loot and for purchase. They will also be craftable if potion crafting is installed. Additional 2e style potions will not be added into the game in any capacity, though existing potions will not be touched.
This component not only adds a number of '3e style' potions, it will replace current 2e style potions will similar 3e style potions. These potions will be distributed around the world as loot and be available for purchase. They will also be craftable if potion brewing is installed.
These components will only be available if 3e style potions are added to the game in some capacity. They determine the maximum spell level of potions equivalents added to the game. The default level cap if none of these components are installed is level 3 (as per 3.x rules).
Also see Components xxx: Brew Potion as high level ability.
If this component is installed, the player can choose when potion brewing becomes available to a given class (or if it becomes available). In order to change the progression, see NAME.ini. The default level that classes gain potion brewing is as follows: wizards, priests and sorcerers can create potions at level 3; bards gain potion creation at level 6; and rangers and paladins gain potion creation at level 12.
This component is not available if Proficiencies is installed (as creation is tied to the alchemy and herbalism proficiencies). If you are going to install proficiencies, it is HIGHLY recommended that you do not install this component. This component is also not compatible with xxx1 of Brew Potion as a High Level Ability. Do not install it if you are planning on installing that.
This group of components deal with potion crafting options as high level abilities.
If this component is installed, brew potion is only available as a high level ability. Note that this component is not compatible with proficiencies. Do not install it if you plan on installing that mod. Further, this component is not available if COMPONENT ??? is installed. So, if you are planning on installing this component, do not install that one.
This component also gives access to brewing potions for thieves and/or bards if they do not otherwise have access (see below).
If this component is installed, more potent potions can only be installed as high level abilities. If 3e style potions are craftable, this gives access to higher level potions, one for each level beyond the max (i.e. one for potions of 4th level potency for a default install).
This component also gives access to brewing potions for thieves and/or bards if they do not otherwise have access (see below)
If this component is installed, it gives thieves and bards the ability to brew potions if they do not otherwise have access to brewing potions. Thieves and bards will be able to bypass the need to cast a spell for creation by paying double the cost (either in materials, gold, or experience points or some combination).
If this component is installed, no component materials are required to create a potion. However, creation cost is doubled (or stays the same if installed alongside the Experience Cost component).
If this component is installed, characters must burn experience points in order to brew a potion. This does not lower a character's level even if they no longer have enough experience points for their current level. This does, however, delay advancement to the next level as normal. Potion cost is eliminated if this component is installed (or stays the same if installed alongside No Material Components).
If this component is installed, potion creation is automatically successful. In this case, crafting kits cannot be used to create potions of a higher tier than they would be able to otherwise.
COMPONENT XXX: Wasted Failure If this component is installed, a failure to create a potion does not produce anything except a drain on the character's resources. The character pays full cost for the potion and burns any materials, but no potion is created. Install if you like to be frustrated.
COMPONENT XX1: Wasted Failure (less harsh) If this component is installed, a failure to create a potion does not produce anything except a drain on the character's resources. The character pays half cost for the potion, but no potion is created. Install if you like to be frustrated.
Potion & Oil Creation
A potion is a magic liquid that produces its effect when imbibed. Potions vary incredibly in appearance. Magic oils are similar to potions, except that oils are applied externally rather than imbibed. A potion or oil can be used only once. It can duplicate the effect of a spell of up to 3rd level that has a casting time of less than 1 minute and targets one or more creatures or objects.
The Process
Among the easiest of items to make, potions range from simple healing brews to potent mixtures capable of taming dragons or restoring a character to complete health and sanity. Some potions are clerical potions and can only be manufactured by priests.
Component Note
Level Requirements
Both priests and wizards must be at least 9th level to create potions. Paladins and Rangers can create potions at 27th level. Bards can create scrolls at 30th level. If Proficiencies is installed, however, then characters will instead need to have the requisite number of proficiency points in Alchemy or Herbalism in order to create potions.
Research
Before a character can brew a potion, he or she must discover what processes, materials, and special ingredients are required, and how these must be combined for success. This research requires a cost of 100 gp per potion tier, but if the character uses a contact other plane spell to speed their research, the cost is only 50 gp per tier.
If the character has a full dose of the potion in question to use as a sample, the research costs nothing (except for the loss of the potion itself).
Occasionally, potion recipes can be found lying around in a wizards keep or on the person of a wealthy alchemist. In addition, certain specialists can be convinced to teach recipes to generous potential student.
Once a character has researched a potion's formula, they need not research it again; they can create that particular potion as often as they wish, as long as they can provide the right materials.
Component Note
COMPONENT XXX: Brew Potion Research Not Required
If this component is installed, characters do not need to discover the potion's recipe in order to create it.
Processes and Materials
Potions must be created using an Alchemy Kit. Alchemy Kits come in three verities: standard, quality, and masterwork, in order of quality. The higher the tier of the potion, the more successful creation is likely to be. Alchemist kits can typically be bought at most temples or magic shops, or they can be created. (see craft miscellaneous items).
The chart below shows the suggested kind of kit for the tier suggested. An alchemist kit can also be used to create a potion of a lower tier than is required. In that case, the chance of success is higher. On the other hand, a character can use an alchemist kit of lower quality than recommended to create a given potion. However, the chance of success is greatly reduced. See the chart below.
Cost
Assuming that the character is able to obtain any special or unusual materials required for the potion, it will cost them as per the table below.
Success or Failure
The base chance for a successful brewing is 70%, +2% per character level, - 5% per tier of the potion. Note that a failure will always produce something. See the Table: Failed Brews for details. This chance is further modified by the quality of the kit used to create the potion. A standard kit imposes a -10% chance to create a potion. A quality kit does not give a bonus or impose a penalty. A masterwork kit gives a +5% bonus to craft a potion.
