Missing SMS and Calls when on Wifi connection only #2668

On Pixel 5 with current stable (2023103100) With Provider Google Fi

When device goes into deep sleep for 10-15 minutes locked And device is connected to Wifi only, without Cellular service & LTE/5G Then SMS and Calls are no longer received

Workaround is to disable and renable Airplane mode or toggle Wifi on and off

I've encountered this too. The "Fix connectivity" button temporarily fixes it.

I was under the impression that SMS and Calls should not be received while on Airplane mode. I was going to file a bug to report that I am receiving SMS while on WiFi and Airplane mode is on.

From the GrapheneOS website:

Activating airplane mode will fully disable the cellular radio transmit and receive capabilities, which will prevent your phone from being reached from the cellular network ... Enabling airplane mode disables the cellular radio, but Wi-Fi can be re-enabled and used without activating the cellular radio again. This allows using the device as a Wi-Fi only device. ... Airplane mode is the only way to avoid the cellular network tracking your device and works correctly on the devices we support.

Can we receive clarification on this? I selectively activate my cellular radio when needed. If Airplane mode is being bypassed, the mitigations of having Location turned off, not using active scanning wifi probe requests, etc should not be considered effective if one is continuously pinging cell towers.

@xarthna Airplane mode disables the cellular radio, not calls and texts. Our documentation is accurate. Wi-Fi calling and texting exists. Please use Matrix chat and the discussion forum for questions and support.

I have Wifi Calling turned off in the settings so I was under the impression that all activity from the cell provider would cease. However, I am far from learned in this area. If cell towers are not involved in the deliving of SMS then, the combination of WiFi and Airplane mode seems to be working as intended and with the effect I have been trying to acheive. Thank you for the clarification @thestinger.

Wi-Fi calling toggle disables Wi-Fi calling, not Wi-Fi texting.

There's a toggle to disable a SIM which will disable calls/texts/data through that carrier but will NOT disable the cellular radio like airplane mode does. A phone without an active SIM that's not in airplane mode will still use cellular to be able to make emergency calls and receive emergency alerts.

Also, we do plan on adding a toggle for fully disabling Wi-Fi carrier functionality instead of only disabling calling since it doesn't turn off texting. It's a medium priority.

Likely a carrier issue.
