GravityCraft or CoinCraft? #2

Open Aaron-E-Walsh opened 10 years ago

Hi guys, an open ended question here as we have time to make this decision. In your opinion should our Minecraft mod (the Gravity Coins Minecraft mod) be called "GravityCraft" or "CoinCraft"? It will be the basis for a large number of iED competitions, and we'll also promote it for schools to use outside of any competitions, and so the official name we select will be with us for years to come.

Do you have a gut reaction to either "GravityCraft" or "CoinCraft" ?

Gravity Coins seems an interesting project name over all. I am reminded of the Atlas Shrugged cigarettes with the gold dollar sign, a token symbol of Galt's Gulch where trade and commerce was conducted differently. I made a first pass logo over in https://github.com/GravityCoins/GravityCraft/blob/master/images/gravitycoin01.png in case it's useful to replace the generic gravatar icon with something more bit coin-ish. Regarding what to call a Gravity Coins Minecraft mod, I would stick with GravityCoinCraft, splitting out either sounds a bit like tweaking gravity in game along the lines of modes like the qCraft quantum physics A.I. Lab mod, and coin craft being something to do with in game currency... which it is, but there are a lot of projects to turn up in game casinos using bit coins and it might be best to avoid that sort of thing. Thinking about earning gravity coins using scratch, green foot, Alice, etc., I'm not sure what you'd call that besides a gravity coin mod for {insert game here...}.

I love the logo, Dan. I'm about to hit the hay, but caught your reply and took a look. I like the style of the golden G in the center, enhanced with more traditional currency lines (it almost reminds me of a closed hand, that universal symbol of courage and strength). I was also surprised at how nice the edge of the coin looked with the iED logo and text, which added a nice polish to it. Tomorrow I'll update our github logo :)

Thanks also for your thoughts on the official name for this particular project. I think you are right about including the full name "gravity coins" in the name itself so there's no confusion about its origin and purpose. Tomorrow I'll update the repository name so that it reflects this name as well.

Excellent all around.

Going to call it a night and will catch up with you tomorrow.

Agreed, Gravity Coins sounds good. Haven't thought of Galt's Gulch in some time, nice reference.

Tomorrow I'll update the repository name

Aaron, let me know if you want me to do this or any other administrative task. I'm still learning about GitHub, and it would help for me to have some tasks to do.

I'm also going to install Git on my home Linux machine and plug-ins for NetBeans and fool around with push/pulling test files to our repo.

Just wanted to let you know that I was able to push/pull from my Ubuntu box from the command line and from NetBeans 7.3, everything looks good. capture

Aaron-E-Walsh commented 10 years ago

Congratulations Chris. That's great news. Seems like the repo is working like a charm. I am going to give it a shot with Eclipse tonight or tomorrow, which, together with Netbeans, will give us two IDEs out of the gate. I'll let you know how it goes.

Did you have to do anything special other than pull the code from the repository using Netbeans & compile/run it?

Nothing special, just authenticate and clone the repo. The JavaFX Circles project is a NetBeans project, you may need to import it as such to Eclipse.

Great; I'll let you know how it goes once I give it a spin with Eclipse.
