Dashboard - Add 'text box' widget to dashboards #4491

Context

Allow the creation of 'text box' widgets to dashboards, similar to Kibana's Markdown Widget.

We are wanting to provide staff who are non-technical, a way to find information quickly and without flooding them with all the information on one dashboard and also not having to provide them with access to streams. With this addition we would be able to create html links to other dashboards from within a dashboard allowing users to find information easily.

For example, dashboard 1 may be a high level overview which contains total metrics for all systems around the world. Dashboard 1 will link to dashboard 2,3,4,5,... which would be total metrics for all systems for separate continents. These dashboards will then link to country specific dashboards.

This allows for easy navigation of the dashboards allowing them to drill down on the specific metrics available.

What is the state? I also would like to be able to add comments and links to dasboard without click somewhere.

+1 - A simple text or markdown widget would give us the ability to add notes, tips and tricks, additional background, etc to a dashboard - a very useful idea.

As a new user coming from the Splunk world this is a feature that is hard to do without. It's IMO critically important to be able to explain right in the dashboard what the purpose of various widgets and tables are, and to link to runbooks that fix a given issue or to a wiki doc that better explains.
