MoM - Adrian opens the meeting at 0800 (PT) / 1600 (BST)

Discussion on Real-Time Carbon Footprint Reporting Chris brought up a new topic about real-time reporting on carbon footprint, making reference to Facebook's recent research on embodied carbon. Chris highlighted the impact of spreading embodied carbon over multiple years, which is not currently considered in the GHG Protocol. Adrian and Chris talked about the difficulties of distributing carbon emissions over time and the possible advantages of updating the GHG Protocol. Chris mentioned that this work could be important for future conversations and offered to share relevant links and resources.

EU Energy Efficiency Directive and Data Reporting Chris Adams discusses the implications of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) for data reporting and emphasises the importance of input data for calculating detailed location-based carbon footprint figures for hyperscalers. Adrian is suggesting adding columns to the current data set to comply with EU definitions and regulations. Sean Mcilroy has agreed to create an issue for this proposal and is discussing the timeline for implementing these changes.

AI Act and Energy Consumption Reporting Chris gave an overview of the AI Act and its requirements for reporting energy consumption. He referred to a Google Doc outlining the law's specific parts relevant to energy consumption reporting. Adrian and Chris discussed the challenges of collecting and reporting energy consumption data for AI models. Chris also mentioned ongoing efforts by groups like Energy Star AI to compare different models and provide energy consumption figures.

Regulation Work Stream and Future Planning Chris suggested creating a workstream to monitor upcoming regulations and their potential impact. Sean agreed to review a presentation on upcoming regulations in the next meeting. Chris stressed the importance of sharing this information with members to help them prepare for upcoming regulatory changes. Sean and Chris also discussed the need for a system to monitor upcoming regulations and the possibility of forming new working groups to address these changes.
