Carbon reduction for real-time cloud, SCI methodology, and data transparency. Adrian raises concerns about lack of transparency in published paper on carbon reduction for real-time cloud. Henry suggests using a rating system or certification body to evaluate the sustainability of data centers. Sean proposes using the Impact Engine framework to provide a mechanism for assessing sustainability, but the working group decides against it.

Amazon's carbon footprint and sustainability efforts, including use of SCI and real-time cloud data. Adrian grumbles about the lack of data and greenwashing by Amazon and its green software foundation. Pindy and Henry discuss the need for member organizations to provide use cases and data to monitor SCI in a consistent manner. Amazon aims to market its cloud service as greener, citing third-party audits. Adrian discusses the team's efforts to gather and document cloud provider metadata, including 2023 data. The project aims to provide a source of data for impact frameworks and others, with decent definitions and comparability.

Cloud providers' carbon footprint and data center energy efficiency. Speakers discuss reviewing and documenting cloud provider sustainability data before it becomes standard. Microsoft and Google's carbon emissions increased due to AI investment and data centre growth.

Amazon's carbon footprint and renewable energy investments. Amazon has made significant investments in renewable energy sources to power its expanding operations. Currently, 22 regions are able to generate 100% carbon-free energy. These efforts have contributed to Amazon's goal of achieving 100% carbon neutrality globally, although more specific location-based data still needs to be added. During a discussion between Gadhu and Adrian, the challenge of optimizing energy usage in large organizations with multiple locations was brought up, while Group proposed using market-based instruments as a potential solution. Adrian explained that the issue with location-based and market-based approaches is that they do not account for companies that both generate and consume energy. He suggested a new approach called "net location" which would consider both the generated and consumed energy.

Data center energy efficiency, water usage, and replenishment. Adrian pointed out that data centers don't run entirely on clean energy; rather, they purchase clean energy. Henry mentioned that data centers are complex and have an impact on location and the market. The two also discussed the effectiveness of water usage in data centers, noting that Microsoft publishes individual water usage numbers for each region, Amazon publishes a global number, and Google does not publish any data. Adrian emphasized the importance of water efficiency and replenishment in data centers.

Sustainability impact categories for data centers, including water consumption. The group is discussing potential impact categories for the Green Software Foundation, with water being a significant focus. The deployment of regions is limited by energy and water availability. AI workloads in data centers increase energy consumption, leading to high water usage. The group is also addressing the sustainability impacts of electronic devices and data centers. Gadhu highlights the circular economy as relevant to the company due to embodied emissions and upcoming regulations. Henry and others are discussing the life cycle assessment (LCA) of cloud computing and its environmental impact.

Sustainability and AI initiatives in a tech company. Thomas emphasized the EU Artificial Intelligence Act and its effect on Mail's discussions. Thomas is promoting GSF as a means to identify tangible actions for sustainability. There are two talks scheduled under the finops umbrella. Thomas mentioned a forthcoming blog post or article about the combination of green initiatives and AI, as well as podcasts. This is currently in draft and will be passed to Namrata for review. Sean will be conducting a workshop for a project, which will include breakdown sessions, prep work, and brainstorming. Topics for discussion will include sustainability metrics and technologies for AI. Sean and Henry will be discussing the scope of the green AI committee and its impact on the SCR. The group has decided to include a discussion topic for the next meeting, aimed at defining and outlining impacts and technologies related to AI. Thomas mentioned the Open Compute project's sustainability label, and how it is related to the CER project.

Data center sustainability, standards, and AI software development. Organization discusses onboarding new members and responsibilities. Sean facilitates discussion on diversifying standards working group, including data centers and SSI. Sean and others discuss developing an SCI for AI software, water intensity, and blockchain.
