GSF Standards Working Group meeting

Henry opens the meeting at 1600 BST

MoM

Meeting Summary

The GSF Standards Working Group reviewed and discussed the proposal for AI carbon intensity. They emphasized the importance of creating a specification that targets developers and data scientists. Naveen highlighted the challenges in measuring the carbon footprint of AI, especially for generative AI models. The group debated whether to integrate this proposal into the SCI framework as a standalone specification or as an appendix. Joseph showcased the IF framework, which visually presents environmental impact data and its potential for real-time analysis. The meeting also included updates on projects, such as the submission of a real-time cloud article to the SC for ratification. The group also discussed potential certification bodies for the SCI standard, with SGS being identified as a promising candidate.

Meeting Minutes

AI Carbon Intensity Proposal Overview Naveen outlined the objectives of expanding SCI (Software Carbon Intensity) to AI, with a focus on engaging developers and data scientists. He also addressed the difficulties associated with measuring carbon intensity for generative AI, particularly when utilizing managed services. Naveen emphasized the importance of establishing boundaries and proxy metrics for estimating energy consumption. Additionally, he underscored the need for defining software boundaries and implementing industry benchmarks and LC (Life Cycle) mechanisms.

Discussion on AI Specification Integration Henry and Naveen discuss the potential placement of the AI specification within the existing SCI framework. Sean suggests that a standalone specification might be easier to push through ISO. Pindy asks about the alignment with the Green AI group, and Naveen clarifies the joint effort between the standards group and the Green AI committee. Henry and Sean discuss the potential structure of the AI specification, including the possibility of an appendix or a standalone project.

Green AI Specification Integration Pindy inquires about the Green AI group's remit and the alignment of the AI framework with their efforts. Naveen explains the Green AI committee's role and the upcoming workshop between the standards group and the Green AI committee. Sean Mcilroy mentions that the Green AI committee's proposals are ahead of the standards group's efforts. Henry suggests giving the Green AI committee something to react to, which could help in getting their approval.

Drafting and Approval Process for AI Specification Henry and Sean discussed the potential structure of the AI specification. They discussed the idea of having an ISO sub-number. Sean suggested that the AI specification should be an extension of the SCI, with child specifications falling under the main SCI. Henry and Sean agreed to open a repository to start drafting the AI specification and bring it back to the working group for approval. Henry is seeking feedback on whether the AI specification should remain within the standards working group or become an independent project.

IF Demo and Visualizer Overview Joseph gives a short introduction to the IF framework and its role in processing manifest files for tracking environmental impact. He showcases the IF visualizer, demonstrating how it enables users to access environmental impact data more easily. Joseph clarifies the visualizer's features, including time series data and component breakdowns. He also answers questions about the visualizer's capabilities, such as real-time data integration and aggregating data by month or week.

Feedback and Future Plans for IF Visualizer Henry and Pindy express interest in the visualizer's potential to inform operations and identify spikes in environmental impact. Joseph explains the current limitations of the visualizer and the potential for future enhancements based on user feedback. Pindy suggests the need for a narrative to explain spikes in environmental impact to management. Joseph acknowledges the need for a narrative and suggests the visualizer can provide enough information for users to investigate further.

Project Updates and Next Steps Sean Mcilroy provides an update on the real-time cloud project, which is being reviewed for member feedback. Pindy discusses the progress on the SCE RISS project, including the completion of workshops and the next steps for strategy and implementation pillars. Pindy shares a diagram illustrating the structure of the strategy pillar and the plan for the next meeting to present it to workshop participants. Henry and Pindy discuss the drafting process and the importance of maintaining engagement throughout the document creation.

Certification Bodies and Standards Shiv inquires about potential certification bodies for the SCI standard and researches existing software-related standards. Shiv identifies SGS as a potential certification body due to their extensive portfolio in sustainability and verification. Henry and Shiv discuss the importance of having a certification aspect to support the SCI standard. Henry suggests pushing the potential certification bodies to the steering committee for further discussion and decision-making.

Meeting Conclusion and Next Steps Henry summarizes the key points discussed during the meeting, including the AI carbon intensity proposal, the IF visualizer demo, and the project updates. Henry and Sean discuss the next steps for the AI specification, including drafting and bringing it back to the working group for approval. Henry thanks everyone for their participation and contributions to the meeting.
