Previous Meeting Notes - SCI for AI

SCI workshop to define the scope and functional unit for the SCI standard for AI:

  • Clearly define the problem statement and critical challenges the SCI standard for AI aims to address. This will help focus the workshop discussions.
  • Determine whether there should be a single functional unit for AI in general or if multiple functional units are needed for different classes or archetypes of AI systems. This decision should consider factors like model size, accuracy, and other relevant parameters.
  • Ensure the workshop has AI experts representing it. This cross-pollination of expertise will be crucial for defining the appropriate scope and functional unit.
  • Prioritize high-level consensus on the key elements rather than getting bogged down in detailed wordsmithing. The baseline specification can be iteratively refined after the workshop. Leverage existing work, such as the base SCI specification and the previous discussions from the Green AI Committee, as a starting point to build upon.
  • Prepare pre-read materials and research papers to help inform the workshop discussions and ensure participants are aligned on the field's current state. The goal should be to produce a baseline SCI specification for AI that can serve as the community's foundation for further development and refinement.

Meeting Notes

Summary Notes

The meeting focused on approving the SEI for AI workshop and project. The workshop aims to define the SEI for AI, covering topics like AI types, training vs. inference, and carbon impact. The workshop will have six sessions, each lasting 1.5 hours, with a maximum of 20 participants. Applications will be reviewed from January 10-17, with the first session on January 28. The group discussed the need for AI experts, industry representatives, and those with software and hardware expertise. The GSF is also merging with the Sustainable and Scalable Infrastructure Alliance, expanding its scope to include hardware standards.

Minutes

Discussion on SCI for AI Henry discusses the conversation regarding Naveen's SCI for AI proposal. Sean clarified that the standards working group has approved the project but has not provided any comments yet. Russ reviews the workshop page link and outlines the workshop's scope, target audience, and logistical considerations. Henry suggests that the workshop sessions should be designed first, followed by the determination of logistics. The group talks about the necessity of an orientation session and the different types of AI that will be covered.

Workshop Session Outline Henry and Gadhu discuss the sessions needed for the workshop, which include defining boundaries and writing the Session Charter Intent (SCI). Tammy suggests that it would be beneficial to clarify the different types of AI. Speaker 4 adds that AI can be classified as classical or generative. The group agrees on the importance of having a session dedicated to collaboratively writing the Session Engagement Intent (SEI). Gadhu emphasizes the need for a session to work through examples and document challenges. Russ proposes a structure consisting of six sessions and discusses the ideal time commitment for participants.

Selection Criteria and Application Process The group discusses the criteria for selecting participants for the workshop, focusing on their expertise and commitment. Henry suggests inviting specific individuals and implementing a selective application process. Russ Trow shares a draft application form and invites questions to help effectively assess the applications. The group agrees on the necessity of a summary outlining each applicant's expertise and how it aligns with the workshop's objectives. Gadhu and Henry also emphasize the importance of balancing different types of AI and various life cycle stages during the workshop. balancing different types of AI and various life cycle stages during the workshop.

Workshop Timing and Logistics Russ inquires about the best timing for the workshop, and the group reaches a consensus to start in mid to late January. They discuss the application deadline and the date for the first orientation session. The group decides that the first meeting will be held midweek to avoid conflicts with other GSF activities. Russ suggests maintaining a consistent weekly schedule for the workshop sessions, and the group agrees. They also address time zone considerations and finalize the proposed timing for the sessions.

Project Review and Merger Announcement Henry gave a brief update on the project, highlighting the merger with the Sustainable and Scalable Infrastructure Alliance (SSIA). Sean elaborated on the merger's benefits and introduced the new hardware standards working group. The group discussed the intersection between software and hardware standards, exploring potential opportunities for collaboration. Sean also mentioned an upcoming Ask Me Anything (AMA) session for GSF members to introduce the new working group. The group expressed excitement about the new opportunities and the potential for cross-collaboration.

Finalizing Workshop Details Russ provided an overview of the workshop's design and logistics, detailing the application form and selection criteria. The group agreed to review the final details asynchronously before opening the applications. Henry confirmed the date for the next meeting and then adjourned the current meeting. The group expressed excitement about the upcoming workshop and the new opportunities arising from the SSIA merger.
