App should display a loading GIF or message somewhere whenever data is loading

Agreed. This should work.

The GIF's white outline shows up in an unpleasant way, doesn't look anti-aliased for some reason, even when scaled by 50%. Might be able to do something with plain CSS or SVG instead.
