Green NFT Hackathon: Awareness Prize #2

Open mangorocoro opened 3 years ago

mangorocoro commented 3 years ago

Green NFT Hackathon Awareness Prize Bounty

Total ETH prize will be denominated from the total Gitcoin Round 9 Green NFT Grant

Challenge Description

Unfortunately, most artists and collectors are not aware of the many options for minting NFTs and their associated ecological impact. This first bounty will be awarded to a body of research that outlines a wide variety of current projects/solutions and explains how they reduce energy consumption of NFTs. The hope is that by having a consolidated resource with clear information on the advantages of supporting these options, we can immediately reduce the impact of NFTs on the environment without waiting for longer-term solutions.

Submission Requirements

Title format for submission example: [Awareness Bounty] Carbon footprint analysis of minting an ERC-721 NFT

Submit your research and outlines on current projects or solutions you’ve identified for this bounty via a text submission under this Github Issue.

Styling with markdown is supported in Github Issues. If you would like to submit via PDF, you can do so by dragging your PDF into the text editor area. More resources on attaching files can be found here.

Judging Criteria

Portions of the bounty will be awarded to teams and individual contributors based on the discretion of a panel of judges who will be selected based on their contributions and good standing within the NFT community.

Winner Announcement Date

Work has been started.

These users each claimed they can complete the work by 7 hours ago. Please review their action plans below:

1) lucadonnoh has started work.

We aim to develop an economic model to estimate the real impact of NFTs on greenhouse gas emissions, using a principled approach based on peer-reviewed literature. We are also building a leaderboard that uses the aforementioned model to rank NFTs by the impact of various operations (e.g. minting and transferring), as well as providing a collection of existing best practices and tools to create greener NFTs. 2) drillz has started work.

Our mission is to create an awareness about the ecological impact of NFTs' activities. NFT users and enthusiasts will be able to see how much energy is expended and how much greenhouse gas is emitted. Our aim is not to discourage or choose a side as to the ecological impact of human advancement activities but to make everyone of us accountable and work towards an efficient media of minimizing the ecological impact of NFTs and other cryptocurrencies on our planet. 3) githbu1 has started work.

Using GreenearthNFT to protect animals, plants and the earth, wildlife NFT trading platform where people can upload photos(videos...) and create the NFT. 1) Complete the development of The GreenearthNFT trading platform: Support users uploading photos (videos), mint and trade NFT, code audit; Date: Q2 2021 2) Smartphone camera + chip, take photos with app. Support uploading the original data and hash value into the blockchain; The photographer of the photo has the autonomy over his own work and is very convenient when he needs to prove it, Date: completed 3) Every year, GreenearthNFT will host a wildlife photography competition; It is estimated that there will be 48000 photographers from 100 countries and regions around the world; Date: December 31 of each year. 4) Community campaign: Accepting token donation, lunaching community event "saving endangered animals" and social with social media promotions 4) robin-rrt has started work.

"The State of NFT Environmental Impact Reduction” is a unique research paper that audits the energy efficiency of NFT projects across chains that currently support NFT minting, based on leading metrics. Based on our analysis, we will uncover common characteristics that lead to the reduction of the environmental impact of NFT minting and transactions. 5) rubberfetish has started work.

hxhf 6) climatefutures01 has started work.

Creating awareness of one's climate impact needs to have several components in order to engage a wider audience beyond the people reading this at Gitcoin. We need a platform and messaging that can “widen the base” of climate action and bring in new recruits to the cause. When we want to encourage people to take action it needs to be done in way that is constructive, fun, easy, and not judgmental.

Our mission at Climate Futures is to provide tools that people can easily use to understand and manage their carbon footprint. As part of that mission we’ve developed a “beta” platform (www.GreenMyNFT.org) that can be improved or used as a starting point for this Green NFT Hackathon project:

So Firstly,

Our www.GreenMyNFT.org portal was recently launched and as part of the process of working on it since the end of Feb and upgrading our existing crypto calculator to focus on NFTs, we identified several weaknesses in the current methodology used by NFT/Eth carbon calculators:

  1. Use of a single static CO2 emissions factor for historical transactions (Tx’s). The Ethereum usage statistics, network energy consumption, and energy mix powering this have not been static and actually varied over time. The time variability was addressed in our current NFT carbon calculator which uses a daily emissions factor based on the date of the Eth/NFT Tx which is in turn a function of the Eth network statistics.

  2. Overreliance on the Digiconimist.net energy consumption index assumptions. Credit goes to Alex de Vries for raising awareness and for his research on Bitcoin and Eth networks energy consumption, but some critical assumptions in his energy consumption methodology are that Eth miners pay $0.10 per kWh (double what Bitcoin miners pay) and that 60% of the revenue is spent on OPEX. Are these valid/accurate assumptions? Can we produce a better model or more accurate assumptions for Digiconimist’s model?

  3. Lack of reliable data on the energy mix used to power the Ethereum mining network and thus the corresponding CO2 per kWh factor. A real energy network’s carbon intensity per kWh changes over time as new capacity is added to the network. We can neglect hourly changes due to marginal energy production coming on and offline, but the baseload production and carbon intensity has been studied for many years for different national and regional grids. These CO2 intensity stats can be used for carbon calculators such our energy carbon footprint calculator. The challenge with using these CO2 grid factors for the Eth network is that we need to know the approx. geographic distribution of Eth mining. How can this best be mapped for the current mining distribution and can it be mapped historically e.g. since 2017?

We propose to create a collaborative group during this Hackathon to drill down on 2 and 3 and to publish the results for the community. Anyone is open to contribute so please contact us.

Secondly,

As part of a broader collaboration for awareness raising, we propose to create/publish a online gallery of “Greened NFTs” that can be updated by NFT owners once proof has been submitted that they are carbon neutral.

We have incorporated this "Green NFT gallery" idea into our www.GreenMyNFT.org portal but we’d like it to somehow be community driven/managed.

So as part of the Green NFT Hackathon we want to propose/publish what would qualify for inclusion as Green NFT (e.g. some minimum standards) and start the ball rolling on the Green NFT gallery to build awareness.

Anyone is open to contribute so please contact us.

Thanks,

The Climate Futures Team 7) kausug has started work.

Spend less resources and generate more wealth, this is the challenge of the new generation to create money.

With that in mind, we need to unite the maintenance of a healthy planet with exploration and mining of resources in high performance. 8) mikehroth has started work.

Research the energy consumption of the available permutations for blockchains, contracts, and asset storage solutions in relation to NFTs. Create a comparison matrix to visualize the findings in a digestible format. 9) boonetb has started work.

These Bonsai NFTs a rare type of Utility NFT that offers the holders the CO2 removal benefits of the real trees it is protecting. 100% of the selling price of CO2 Staking Bonsais go to conserve and regenerate forest lands. Every Bonsai sold will put 1ACRE of Forest into conservation forever. Each Bonsai Artwork in this collection is an original and 1 of 1. Holders of these NFTs will receive carbon credit certificates for future CO2 staked by forest conserved by Bonsai NFTs. 10) solsista has started work.

As Clean Energy Access and Energy Efficiency activists and Artivists we find this window of awareness exciting and important, before the added environmental cost of digital art gets normalized like all of our already unsustainable consumption patterns.

We are a combined collective of Freeelio, EnergyUnlocked, and DADA.art. We are proposing an analysis of applicability of tried and tested methods for expanding clean energy as well as enabling and incentivizing use of energy when it is greenest, a method called "shifting". 11) beechains has started work.

Green NFTs as Handshake(HNS) top level domains. Stop all the minting and put art on a top level domain that is a NFT. 12) kpadiya has started work.

Promote awareness on the environmental impact of NFTs 14) thetagan has started work.

An open sourced and decentralized research hub for Green NFTs. 15) abhinavmir has started work.

Researched the following -

  1. Quantitative Analysis of carbon footprints of major NFT platforms on L1 Ethereum
  2. Methodology of estimation
  3. Reasons for high carbon footprint
  4. Solutions developers could implement
  5. Present Solutions (Ethereum solutions, Non-Ethereum Solutions, Metadata based solution etc.)

There is a bunch of work left to do!

Note: I’ve been able to research limited topics in this time, thus haven’t been able to expand on most topics (every heading needs to be discussed, including each solution!). The language isn’t formal or academic either (yet).

The direction I’m aiming for is discussing important topics, quantitative analysis of the carbon footprint of present technologies, researching present innovations and their drawbacks and future ideas for developers with proposed architectures.

Guidance from environmentalists and developers on a few things that I’m not sure of would be great. I’ll need a few extra weeks to consolidate this into a solid introduction for artists and researchers. I’d love to get in touch at abhinavmir@protonmail.com. 16) bguiz has started work.

Instead of showing the environmental impact of a blockchain network as a whole, this projectgoes further, focusing on NFT transactions, and the the carbon cost (gCO2e) for individual transactions. 17) shantanu-singh has started work.

Analysis of the current environmental impact of NFTs on the environment, mainly focusing on a wide variety of projects/solutions which can help make it greener. 18) namelessperson0 has started work.

I have provided information on fundamental types of blockchain and their environmental impact in the document. In my analysis, Algorand Blockchain seems to be a good fit for uses cases like selling art. 19) bobsub218 has started work.

AMAART Carbon-footprint-analysis-of-minting-an-ERC-721-NFT https://github.com/bobsub218/Carbon-footprint-analysis-of-minting-an-ERC-721-NFT/blob/main/AMAART-Carbon%20footprint%20analysis%20of%20minting%20an%20ERC-721%20NFT.pdf 20) jennifertrin has started work.

This proposal outlines how the Regen Network can incentivize miners for data transparency and sustainable practices, and as a result, help NFT creators make more informed decisions on blockchains that they utilize.
