Theme: The impact of Climate Change on society as part of monitoring SDG13

GretaTimaite commented 1 year ago

Here's a bunch of questions that we could try to answer:

  1. what is the impact of CO2 emissions on land temperature

    • I believe this is a pretty obvious and simple one (positive correlation), but perhaps could act as "scene setting"
  2. Is increase in CO2 emissions associated with the increase of the production and consumption of renewable energy?

    • for this we could use data on % of renewable energy production and OSM data on renewable energy infrastructure
    • I think this one would lend itself nicely to thinking about monitoring climate action. We could speculate that more infrastructure means more attention to climate action
  3. Is infrastructure of renewable energy production linked to the increase of the production and consumption of renewable energy?

  4. Is the inclination to use renewable energy associated with energy imports?

    • i.e. countries that have to import electricity might be more willing to invest in renewables
  5. Is renewable energy infrastructure a Western thing?

    • this is a very unacademic question but basically I'm thinking which countries have (better) infrastructure for the renewables. My hypothesis is that it's the Western countries. Perhaps countries of lower GDP have other concerns that need to be tackled first, such as hunger
  6. What is the impact of increasing land temp on natural disasters such as drought

    • my hypothesis would be positive one. This would also support the idea of climate change inequalities, i.e. countries that are already "struggling" are mostly impacted by climate change, hence perpetuating vicious circle
  7. I could always bring an active travel and/or public transport perspective into the scene.

  8. Predictive model of... ? land temp, co2 emissions, attitudes towards climate change?!

    • there's this World Values Survey that contains this question in at least the last 3 Waves:

Here are two statements people sometimes make when discussing the environment and economic growth. Which of them comes closer to your own point of view? (Read out and code one answer): 1 Protecting the environment should be given priority, even if it causes slower economic growth and some loss of jobs. 2 Economic growth and creating jobs should be the top priority, even if the environment suffers to some extent. 3 Other answer (code if volunteered only!).

    • my hypothesis is that as land temp increases, co2 emissions increase, renewables infra gets better, etc the support for environmental concerns over economic growth would increase
    • but this could also be segmented along sociodemographic dimensions (e.g. maybe more educated one, higher income groups are more likely to support environment over economic growth)

I think @Kika0 and I agreed that it would be interesting to predict attitudes towards environmental protection over economic growth
