Ideas for using a different engine or template

There are other static site generators out there.

My general requirements:

• compatibility with old devices (no need for fancy javascript features)
• search (client-side ok, we don't have a ton of docs to search through)
• lean/efficient (minimal data usage, javascript, ram and cpu usage, etc.)
• performance (mostly using pagespeed insights to measure this)
• responsive (same page can adapt to various screen widths/mobile devices)

As for design, I do kind of like what just-the-docs does already with a hamburger button on the right instead of the left. That being said, I'm definitely in favor of other designs that don't rely on ye-ol hamburger button.

QarthO brought up docusaurus and has a test site with it. My main gripe is their project's intent to "only focus on newer browsers" as the reason why their hamburger button needs to use fancy javascript. This button simply doesn't function on older (namely mobile) browsers. I'm also not a big fan of how stuff in the header is expanded, but then put inside the hamburger button on smaller-width screens. Rather just keep that stuff consistent (or maybe possible to not use at all).

I think even some of its css is broken on mobile browsers too, easiest place to see that is the handling of the FAQ page.

It is, however, marginally faster on page-to-page loads, even on older browsers.
