It could even be something like the Winter Guardian's ability to pull you back in.
playerBossDistance(X) > configDistanceRange(Y) while ticks(Y) < configTimeRange(A). Some sort of checks like that to trigger an event. Say, Watery Grave but for air.
The attacks from Winter and Nature Guardian's can be avoided easily by flying high enough since their attacks have a limited range.
It is quite easy to kill most bosses in ars magica by flying above them, outside of their attack range. This way you can kill every boss in ars magica without much effort. It takes only 2 green skill points to get the spell componen levitate giving you the ability to fly. So my suggestion is to add some new attacks for bosses against flying players (especially for strong bosses). Some bosses could have some kind of grabing attack or deactivate flying spells
