Installation #332

It simply does not works as written down. Just to get InstallServerClient running I had to modify the file. The last Mint version in the scripts are 18. We're at 21 Next Pharo3 installation has not worked and I had to do it manually. After that createsStone give me Pharo 3.0 And createClient simply bails out with: Installing Pharo3.0 % Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed 100 5822 100 5822 0 0 148k 0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 149k Downloading the latest pharoVM: http://files.pharo.org/get-files/30/pharo-linux-stable.zip Error on or near line 92 :: downloadSmalltalkClient -v Pharo3.0 -d /home/frido/Smalltalks/GsDevKit_home/dev/clients/tode1 :: downloadSmalltalkClient -v Pharo3.0 -d /home/frido/Smalltalks/GsDevKit_home/dev/clients/tode1 Error on or near line 120 :: createPharoTodeClient -v Pharo3.0 tode1 :: createPharoTodeClient -v Pharo3.0 tode1 Error on or near line 111 :: createClient tode1 :: createClient tode1 Error on or near line 150 :: createClient tode1 :: createClient tode1

Can do that as suggested in create client examples:

Installing Pharo7.0 % Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed 100 5306 100 5306 0 0 97k 0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 99k Downloading the latest pharoVM: http://files.pharo.org/get-files/70/pharo-linux-stable.zip Error on or near line 181 :: downloadSmalltalkClient -v Pharo7.0 -d /home/frido/Smalltalks/GsDevKit_home/dev/clients/pharoClient :: downloadSmalltalkClient -v Pharo7.0 -d /home/frido/Smalltalks/GsDevKit_home/dev/clients/pharoClient Error on or near line 120 :: createPharoTodeClient -v Pharo7.0 pharoClient :: createPharoTodeClient -v Pharo7.0 pharoClient Error on or near line 111 :: createClient -v Pharo7.0 pharoClient :: createClient -v Pharo7.0 pharoClient Error on or near line 150 :: createClient pharoClient -v Pharo7.0 :: createClient pharoClient -v Pharo7.0

And so on. I have to assume you are not interested that people try out Gemstone/S So be it...

@FDominicus sorry for not getting back to you … I have COVID and haven’t been keeping up with things … GsDevKit_home is not functional on 20.04 or later .. I have been working on a replacement but it is not quite ready … and being sick has not helped

FDominicus commented 1 year ago

Dear Dave, I hope you will get well soon. I understand that Gemstone/S is an enterprise level Database, and maybe it's not that you are interested in small groups using this database. That makes me sad anyway. The point is I really do like Smalltalk and I'm using it whenever I can, but it's a disappointment if you cannot even try serious applications with it.

I've looked into Gemston into the past, but have not used it intensively. But I'm not happy with all this ORM stuff around and so a real OODB would be good to have. I'm aware I can go the SQL route but is that really the best Smalltalk can offer?

I've my doubts.

With best regards Friedrich

Hi Friedrich,

As Dale mentioned, GsDevKit is running on 20.04.

Also, as a small development team, I can say that the GemTalk team have offered fantastic support, largely beyond the call of duty considering.

Dale is the force behind GsDevKit, and he’s down with COVID so maybe give him a chance to recover before passing judgement on the team and the product :)

FYI - GsDevKit is in flux and moving away from relying on Pharo. For now it uses Pharo 3 to perform many of its functions and if you run the install as described in the docs, it should work as documented.

By the looks of your error, the Pharo download stalled or for whatever reason was not downloading. I’ve seen this before, but the people in the pharo team are usually pretty good at restating servers, or whatever they do to fix this. Maybe just try again. I tried just now to get a copy of 3 and it was working.

I’ll be testing out the new version ofGemStone tomorrow so if you are still having problems let me know and I’ll see if I can help.

Cheers,

Jupiter

I followed the documentation and it simply bailed out because i'm using Mint21, which should not matter. Bu in fact it did. Neither Pharo 3 nor the Pharo 7 -9 stuff one could find was working. So I just can conclude, getting the more free stuff is not of high priority. That I can understand, but do you really think a quite versed user of Linux will spend tons of times if it does not work? The installation has to run as smoothly as possible that people try it out. And well, you really can't expect from a desktop user that he keeps his desktop 2-4 years behind the actual version. But maybe I'm wrong, and you expect that. You can do that and I'm quite sure the programmers will just forget about GemStone/S and use whatever they get to work. The options are there and they are only a Metacello ... load away.

But I understand, you're interested in larger enterprise users and so be it.

With best regards Friedrich

Mit freundlichen Grüßen

It is likely that an edit is needed to support Linux mint 21 … as there are different packages that are needed and the install script probably needs to be taught about linx mint 21 … I am not able to make the edits until I recover from COVID … I’ve been down with the bug for a week now and it still has me in its clutches …

FDominicus commented 1 year ago

It does not seem much and fitting, you just have to add 21 to the script. The software which then is installed is available in Mint 21 also. At least it seems I got all the need prerequisites installed.
