Planetary Imager for capturing DSOs #63

Hello. This app could be used for capturing DSO but it needs at least two features added.

  1. Select the number of exposures (still images not videos)
  2. Set the delay between the exposures. Is feature #1 already possible by setting the camera Max Exposure?

Hi, I think feature 1 should be possible by just setting the frames limit, and then choosing FITS or PNG as save format.

Anyway, as you might noticed, development is unfortunately stopped at the moment, as I'm working to an actual DSO imager: https://astrophotoplus.gulinux.net/

Hello Marco. Thank you for your reply. It is interesting that you are working on a DSO imaging app. As you know there are many already available, some quite good and some lacking in a few areas. Please allow me to make a couple of feature suggestions.

  1. Save the images in several format options to include fits, Tiff, PNG
  2. The camera capture options for DSO images (depending on the camera capabilities): -Keep those from Planetary Imager -Add Raw 8 and 16 Bit -Add any camera native format -For planetary video format add RGB24
  3. The Planetary Imager GUI is well done, simple, clean and easy to use. Try to keep that concept, as much as possible, for the DSO Imager app. Just add the additional capture and save options to the pull down menus/windows.
  4. And of course add the feature to set the number of exposure and the delay between them.
  5. Add the feature to change captures using numerous filters, such as the R,G,B and Ha, OIII etc.

  6. Include an imaging scheduler with a scripting capability. As you already know there are session control apps that have their own capture modules, such as Sequence Generator Pro (Windows only), kstars (cross platform). I have asked the developers of kstars (INDI/Ekos) to integrate other capture apps, but it seems a daunting effort. Maybe you can see if your app can be integrated into kstars. The developer said that other integrated apps, such as SkySafari and PHD2 guiding, actually communicate with a server for that specific app.

    I hope some of these suggestions prove helpful.
