For folks approaching Nix it might also be interesting to see some comparison with two other familiar classes of dependency management systems besides "package managers", namely build dependency tools such as Pip or Maven (which are specialized but do support multiple simultaneous versions) and Docker / Snap (emphasizes encapsulation at expense of overhead and has limited dependencies in the form of layers).
