Exercise: IHA implementation
Exercise intent: Define and apply the IHA metrics used in quantifying and managing human streamflow alteration Paper source: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2020EF001816
Exercise: For the USGS 02080500 ROANOKE RIVER AT ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC, analyze pre and post dam streamflow using the metrics referenced in the paper above. You'll want to define the metric, and then use the data to quantify pre/post dam. You'll need to select time periods (e.g. paper references +-15 years dam construction, but also removing 5 years near dam construction to prevent filling effects of reservoir). You'll want to consider impacts to base flow periods, as well as storm flows as part of your IHA metrics.
Product: Collaborative R-markdown file that's self contained. Use the markdown file to document what you've done, with the steps from data collection to analysis to (possible) interpretation/presentation of results. You'll want to use plots to tell the story, in addition to text that describes pre/post implications for streamflow. The referenced paper above will be helpful, and also contains original source of IHA descriptions (use this as part of your digging into background material - see the sentence here: We used the IHA approach (Richter et al., 1996) to describe alteration in different facets of the flow regime, as in previous research (Gao et al., 2009; Olden & Poff, 2003).).
