Other tracks keep jumping out of sync by significant amounts (10-100ms) at numerous points throughout the film.\r\n• While the 88 Films Blu-ray audio is good quality, the Cantonese has a notable error at around 1:11:21 where a few seconds are silenced, cutting out some laughter and half of a word. The audio syncronization is unaffected. 88 Films' statement is that this issue was present in the source they were given to remaster, so there is nothing that can be done at the moment.\r\n• Both the Cantonese and English from the 88 Films Blu-ray were dual mono, so they were reconverted to DTS-HD MA 1.0 to ensure proper playback through the center channel on surround systems.\r\n\r\n[b]Main English Subtitles:[/b]\r\n• The 88 Films Blu-ray's subtitles are the best translation, so those have been set to default.\r\n• However, there were a few strange lines that didn't seem translated properly. I fixed those by checking their translation in the other English subtitles and adjusting them. For instance:\r\n[quote]My home's just beneath the foot of the mountain. --> My home's just at the foot of the mountain.[/quote]\r\n• I then went through these subtitles line-by-line to check the sync, making small improvements and better matching visual changes and cues, such as cuts.\r\n\r\n[b]Alternate English Subtitles:[/b]\r\n• The Ground Zero DVD, IVL DVD, and iTunes WEB-DL had the same subtitle translation, but iTunes had the best track. It adds a couple of short lines that are missing in the other sources for the Cantonese audio.\r\n• I also corrected errors in those subtitles, including missing/incorrect punctuation and transcription errors. For instance:\r\n[quote]\r\nWomen's' kung fu --> Women's kung fu.\r\nHis limps is soft, you can teach him now --> His limbs are soft. You can teach him now.[/quote]\r\n• The syncing was sloppy on the iTunes subtitles, possibly due to framecuts that were restored in the 88 Films remaster, so I resynced it line-by-line for the Blu-ray source.\r\n\r\n[b]Formatted Subtitles:[/b]\r\n• There were 35 instances of on-screen text in this film, which I formatted as an ASS subtitle track. I compared and selected fonts to match on-screen text when applicable (e.g. in the opening credits) and typeset those signs to match the colours, gradients, and tone of those subtitles' context. (For example: \"come on here\" when a character says \"come on in\"; \"Crane-Bull\" when a character says \"Crane Bill\"; \"There will be no problem, none of that\" when the spoken line is only \"There will be no problem.\"; one subtitle line reading \"All right, uh, help clean up the mess.\" while the lines are spoken by two characters and should read \"– All right. / – Uh, help clean up the mess.\")\r\n• There were also nine or so cases where whoever was doing the subtitles for Amazon got lazy and wrote [MUMBLING] when they couldn't figure out the audio. However, the dialogue is clear enough in the English dub, so I have filled in those gaps in the subtitles. For instance:\r\n[quote]I [MUMBLING] my Tiger Boxing --> If I amalgamate my Tiger Boxing\r\n[MUMBLING] White Lotus Chief --> I can beat the White Lotus Chief.\r\nI'm here for my Crane [MUMBLING] / I don't need more [MUMBLING] styles. --> Watch out for my Crane Pecks. / I don't need more deadly styles.\r\nHey, I'm [MUMBLING] on Pai Mei! --> Hey, I'm Nai-Cheng! Huh?\r\nHe's been badly wounded by White Lotus / his kung fu. --> He's been badly wounded by / White Lotus's kung fu.[/quote]\r\n• I also improved the syncing for a few sentences whose clauses which were split across subtitles, making those subtitles match the spoken phrasing more naturally.\r\n• Due to the framecuts, I went through these subtitles line-by-line to check them for proper syncing for the 88 Films Blu-ray, and adjusted timing issues when present.\r\n\r\n• I then extracted the SDH elements from these subtitles, including all text in square brackets and containing audio cues (e.g. hmm, uh, huh, etc.). I reviewed those line-by-line to check which were applicable for the Cantonese audio, and added them to the 88 Films subtitles when they worked well, creating a custom SDH track for that audio.\r\n• For cues where the audio wasn't quite right, but where an SDH element would fit well, I updated the audio description to match what was happening in the audio, using other SDH elements from these subtitles as precedents for descriptions. (e.g. [MUTTERING] --> [GROANING], [CAT MEOWING] --> [ROOSTER CROWING])\r\n• I also updated the characters' names to match what is in the subtitle translation for the Cantonese.
