Simultaneous Python 2/3 compatibility #36

Aiming to close #34. This is largely the heroic work of @jaycedowell, with contributions from @cjordan and myself.

I should mention, this bumps the version to 3.0.0pre1. Once this is merged, I would like to undertake a bunch of cleanups en route to a 3.0 release.

OK! Going to merge this into a new v3 branch, since this big change is going to need some time to be shaken down. I'll update the main branch with some information about how to install the prototype version.
