x0=0; does this mean the initial oxygen concentration in all simulations was set to 0? That seems unrealistic for baseline oligotrophic conditions. This should be clarified.

This text was a carry over from previous versions. In the function, x0 = 0 is a mathematical convenience for initializing the other variables. Once those values are initialized, x0 is then initialized using the photosynthesis function and takes the value 7.55, using the constants that determine the shape of that function.
