I've added the build status to the README.md and have looked into a couple of people having the same issue: https://travis-ci.community/t/github-ci-notifiactions-from-travis-stopped-working/9238/2
According to https://github.com/travis-ci/travis-ci/issues/10204, the status check type continuous-integration/travis-ci has been deprecated (although it was kept around for a while for transitioning reasons). I think it is necessary to delete and recreate the TravisCI association.
It seems that simply adding the build status to README.md
has resulted in the travis status also being shown again in the PRs (I've merged master into the gl_fse branch. I'll close this for now and we'll see how it behaves in the future. For now travis claims that "Testing your open source projects will always be free!". Let's hope that remains true (let's not forget that travis was bought out in early 2019)
The hooks are clearly active
https://github.com/HISKP-LQCD/hadron/settings/hooks/77392866
and are being delivered to travis. It also appears that they are acted upon:
https://travis-ci.org/github/HISKP-LQCD/hadron/builds
However, they do not show in issues, pull-requests or the repository overview...
