I want to know the actually used memory, so I now let everything run with /usr/bin/time.

Something that I did with other runs to understand this in more detail was to run a loop with free and sleep in the background, writing the output to file. That way, one can then plot memory usage as a function of time (as @pittlerf did recently with the rho contractions, see hiskp-lqcd-projects:55).
