This is a manual merge of @p9g's work on #183, which modifies index.md. This PR is based on the gender branch rather than dev because the former also modifies index.md.

⚠️ DO NOT MERGE ⚠️ until #193 (the PR involving gender) is merged into dev. This PR is marked as a "draft" to prevent an accidental merge, but is otherwise ready to go.
