Search filters #35

Closed hdrdavies closed 8 years ago

hdrdavies commented 8 years ago

As a user I want to search with different filters so I can access slipways suitable to me.

We need to have dropdown menus on a search bar to filter through the different key value pairs on a slipway.

new mockup 1

Once filter is clicked, a drop-down menu will come up displaying the most important filters

hdrdavies commented 8 years ago

@Boatlaunch101 we were thinking when you click the filter button in the top right, a drop-down menu appears with filters like free / not free, ramp length category alongside a couple of others- what do you feel would be the most important filters?

Boatlaunch101 commented 8 years ago

Interesting idea. The most useful filter would be Suitability. Possible answers are Unknown, Portable Only, Small trailer can be pushed, Large trailer needs a car. Here's the thing though. A boat that can be launched on a slipway suitable for a small trailer can also be launched on a slipway suitable for a large trailer. So if I select a small trailer slipway, I wont see the large trailer slipways from which I can also launch my boat. I suppose you could programme the Small trailer filler to include Small and Large trailers and Portable Only would be all three. Then the question is what to do about the Unknown category.
I'd be interested to hear your ideas.

@Boatlaunch101

Well it's certainly helpful that there are those 4 answers and no others - that makes it a lot easier for us.

Maybe the drop-down box could display:

Slipway suitable for: -Small trailer which can be pushed -Large trailer which requires a car ...with an added toggle box for showing unknown suitability

We felt that if their boat is portable, all the slipways should be displayed (are we correct in thinking portable means that the boat can be picked up and carried?).

For unknown - we could show a different marker -e.g. yellow marker, and have a pop-up box which says something like "Warning: Yellow markers have unknown slipways, so don't be surprised if you can't launch from here"

What do you think?

Boatlaunch101 commented 8 years ago

You are correct about Portable and they can launch from all slipways. So for Portable all slipways should be displayed including the unknowns It is not clear to me how the Unknown toggle box will work but I think that you are on the right lines.

hdrdavies commented 8 years ago

@Boatlaunch101 We'll knock together a wireframe later today to show how the toggle box may look

toggleboxwarning

There currently isn't a box to tick for portable boats as we can assume they can be launched from all slipways, and the user may assume this too (but does the user need the assurance from an option on the filter page?).

In the above image on the left hand side you can see the page which is displayed once the 'filter' button is pressed (it will look nicer than shown here!!). On this page, the toggle box (i.e. yes or no), would cause the unknown slipways to display or not.

If the user chooses to display them, they move onto the next screen (middle wireframe), which shows a warning box as we specified above.

After clicking okay, the user will see yellow markers for 'Unknown' slipways (right-hand side wireframe).

Does this seem suitable or do you have any other thoughts?

Looks great. I think that you should include a check box for Portable then all bases are covered. If I want to launch my kayak I can select Portable and only see slipways for people like me. Or I can select all three, assuming that I have the intelligence to understand that my kayak can be launched from a Large slipway, and share the experience with speed boats and jetskiers.

hdrdavies commented 8 years ago

@Boatlaunch101 I think the user should probably only be able to select one box as opposed to multiple - I don't see why someone would tick 'portable' and 'requires car', for example. But will certainly include tick box for portable.

Boatlaunch101 commented 8 years ago

I still like the idea of being able to tick more than one box for the suitability because it covers the scenario I mentioned above.

hdrdavies commented 8 years ago

Ok no problem - we will build it that way.

hdrdavies commented 8 years ago

After a telephone call with Geoffrey, we decided to only allow one tickbox to be selected.
