Write software architecture document #69

It's long past time to write a document explaining how the software architecture so that somebody else (Hi, Rares Vernica!) will be able to pick up maintenance of the code (or, alternatively, understand it well enough to change it). I had hoped to do this after a few simplifications (e.g., #14) were done, but I think it's stable enough that I can start writing and just assume those changes (with some footnotes).

The initial overview section of this doc was finished on 3/22, before I went on vacation, but somehow I forgot to check it in (and deleted the file--luckily I had sent it in e-mail and still had a copy there).
