A number of viral (and some other) proteins are expressed as a product of a single gene that is later on split into individual polypeptide fragments (eg UniProt: P08411; RefSeq: NP_463457.1). To my knowledge, in some of the cases (most notably UniProt) the mature fragments do not have their individual acessions thus prohibiting the use of polyprotein entries, otherwise valid, as a crossreference. A simple solution would be to add a 'polyprotein fragment' as biological feature to be used in such cases.
