new proposed definitions agonist "Any chemical applied externally to cells or any type of environmental condition, such as hypoxia, that inhibits an interaction, potentially by alteration of amount or binding affinity of one or more of the interactors"
antagonist "Any chemical applied externally to cells or any type of environmental condition, such as hypoxia, that stimulates an interaction, potentially by causing modification of one or more of the interactors."

Conditions such as hypoxia can be considered as agonists (or antagonists). I request that the defintion of the term agonist (and antagonist) be amended so as to clearly include conditions such as hypoxia.
For example, see Gordan et al. 2007 CANCER CELL 11 335-347 PMID 17418410
