Formaldehyde corsslinking is not essential for RIP-Chip, see PMID: 17406249 :RIP-Chip (sometimes called RIP-on-Chip or RIP-SEQ) protocol described here allows the identification of multiple RNA targets of RBPs globally and within the context of a cell extract that may or may not have been subjected to physical or chemical cross-linking. [Should rip-chip be a separate entry for Interaction detection - or is this "overkill"?]

RIP: RNA Immunoprecipitation –a modified a ChIP protocol is used to determine if a protein of interest is associated with RNA in vivo. Proteins are crosslinked to nucleic acids by the addition of formaldehyde. RNA sequences that cross-link with a given protein are isolated by immunoprecipitation of the protein, and reversal of the formaldehyde cross-linking permits recovery and quantitative analysis of the immunoprecipitated RNA by reverse transcription PCR.
