I'm still finding this text stroke a little hard to read. Maybe it's the spacing?

- I've tried either text or icons to prevent the issue @cemsbr https://github.com/cemsbr raised regarding width. I think text would be clearer than icons, but open to opinions.
- I've also darkened the text further.
@robeden https://github.com/robeden I think it's reasonable to give an RPG style to stuff in the header or elements that relate in some way to the pixel art, but keep the rest of the design flat/clean.

I think the outlines around the letters are making it less readable than the previous version. On Jun 23, 2014 2:25 PM, "lemoness" notifications@github.com wrote:

The text stroke is difficult for me to read as well. It's the small size as well as the letterspacing.
What if the text were bolded?

OK. Thanks everyone. I’m twisting and turning a bit with this because of the range of views, but here’s another version taking into account the latest comments:

@benmanley You're not going to be able to win them all, no matter what. ;) But we do want to make sure things are readable. It looks there like you've bolded the text, but the blur is back on? Or are my eyes just blurry? However, I can say that's far more readable, so rock on.

From a language localisation point of view, icons would be better than HP, XP, MP. I'm normally VERY in favour of text instead of icons, but in this case definitely icons. I think it would look odd to have most of the site controls in your own language but not those initials. And it will be easy to remember the meaning of these icons so text-on-hover should be the only text that's necessary.
The thin black outlines around everything... there seems to be a lot of it and I'm finding that looks a bit odd. That's just a personal preference though and it might just because I'm not used to it, so you can ignore this if you want to. :)
I like the darker text for the numbers on the bars, and the colours of the bars and backgrounds.

Being the new guy, please feel free to tell me to go away if I'm being annoying. :-)
To my eye it feels like there are too many elements. The black borders wrapping a white border on everything (with gray bits in the corners) is quite strong.
When I talked about consistency, I was envisioning something like this: (Note: this is a mockup, not done in CSS)
Aside from one editorial change* it's the same thing, just with less pieces of flair. I think something like it would match the style better and demand less cognitive load.
* - I made the background color behind the avatar the same color as the one behind the stats. Seems like they should go together to indicate they're related.
PS - I agree with @Alys, I like the icons better than text in this case.
Black text isn't going to work because some of the user colors will make it unreadable. White text doesn't work for similar reasons. Hence the need for a stroke or drop shadow.
I feel like what you have there is also too bare bones, and going backwards.

Black text isn't going to work because some of the user colors will make it unreadable. White text doesn't work for similar reasons. Hence the need for a stroke or drop shadow.
The text would be inverted as need be. Should be easy to do in CSS.
I feel like what you have there is also too bare bones, and going backwards.
Could be. Depends on where you want to go stylistically, but minimal is very "in" these days. The industry trend is toward minimalism.
We considered inverting the text, but decided we didn't like the way it looked. However, need be, that's the plan, I think.
And yes, minimalism is in, however, your mock up looks more like 00s minimalism and less like the most recent minimalism trend which is more about flat clean graphics with strong lines. Flat minimalism is also not making the same headway for game web app design as it is with other apps, so there's that question as well.
Negative space is very poorly used (which I'm aware is a problem outside the header in the current implementation as well) which makes it look lazy, instead of trendy. For minimalism to look chic, it needs to be utilizing all space as well as it can. So without fixing our negative space problems, minimalism is just going to look like we have no design at all, and put no work into site style. Very much more like what Habit used to be, so very backwards, no forwards.
The other concern about going minimalistic is that Habit doesn't have flat, minimalistic art. A minimalist site design is only going to work if the site itself isn't busy, which is why you see so many major brands doing a complete flat redesign, including their logos. If Habit wants to go flat minimalist, it would require changing the art style as well, or else it would clash something terrible.
Of course, this is all completely my opinion, but as a person who writes about web marketing and because of that, graphic design trends, it's very difficult for me to write about it without sounding like I am the One True Source because I need to sound like the One True Source when I'm working. So keep that in mind. ;)

Fair, though don't confuse a mockup thrown together in 15 minutes for the sake of discussion as a proposed final design. :-) Also, you're looking at graphics and I'm looking at task boxes. That's why I'm saying flat rectangles match.
Okay, found a place we do agree: I am on board with flat rectangles, but not a complete flat minimalist design for the site. :P

I think we're suffering here from not too many cooks, but too many back seat drivers. A lot of us can comment on design, but can't do it ourselves. And while it's good to have those kinds of comments, as we've stated before, it makes it really difficult for the designers to actually design.
I think it might be in our best interests to create a branch on the repo for CSS work, so it can be more agile and collaborative, without affecting the site proper. That way, folks like Rob Eden could do more than make mockups, but actually submit partial PRs, just for tweaks to think about. I think it would better inspire collaboration, reduce some of the stress Ben Manley has as the One Person Who Seems To Do CSS right now, and be just Good over all.

If there was a CSS branch, I'd definitely be on board. It's much easier to show instead of tell, in this case. :) It would be much easier to do multiple iterations with CSS than to mock up everything individually.
The thin black lines, outlines and shadows are making it hard to look at & a strain to read, especially but not exclusively when the background is grey. I'm a bit afraid what will happen if the whole site goes in that direction. Bold helps, but doesn't cure. @robeden's version is easier on my eyesight. CSS branch sounds like it'd make beta first easier, maybe?
I like @robeden minimalism, but it needs more work and discussion. For now, I also like the latest @benmanley version and I only have two little notes about it: HP, XP and MP labels should have the same size (consequently, the bars will be aligned); the bar numbers seem easier to read in @robeden version and maybe that's because they are black (I'm not sure whether @benmanley version is).
P.S. I accidentally edited this out: @benmanley your last version is definitely better. Also, I don't mean we shouldn't go in that direction (strokes), just sharing a potential issue.
@deilann Yep. Can’t win ‘em all, but there are valid points being raised all around and I’m wending my way through a dark and winding path.
I went back to a slight blur on the text shadow because I agree with @wc8 and everyone else who felt it was getting hard on the eyes. Also I’ve made the box outlines subtler for the same reason.
... and w/ background (shopped in)
@benmanley Do you have thoughts on making a branch for CSS work?

I wonder if reducing the opacity of the shadow would help, so it's more apparent when needed (on a light background) and less obtrusive when unneeded.
I really like the brightening of the outer border and the square corners. Looks much better. :+1:
I’ve committed the restyled status bar here: 15a63d6e66cc8b2ee7130cc4c9a829c2dd5d42bf
I’ll look at tweaking the text shadow, but I think it’s good enough for now.
@lemoness @lefnire – don’t know when this will go to beta or production, but it might be worth a Bailey, saying something like:
Based on your feedback, we’ve updated the design of the new status bars with an 8-bit style and improved accessibility.
@deilann – re: a css branch...
Ideally, the develop branch / beta.habitrpg.com would be the best place to test new designs. But it’s difficult to forge ahead boldly when you’re likely to run into somebody’s fist.
A CSS branch would create a less pressurised environment to test interface changes and would avoid changes going to production before they’re ready.
But for people to test it effectively and dig into the code without having to install locally (e.g. using browser dev tools), it would need to be deployed to a url, say “css.habitrpg.com” or whatever. Is that feasible/manageable?
Also, there would need to be a way to alert collaborators and beta testers to changes. How would this work?
Based on your feedback, we’ve updated the design of the new status bars with an 8-bit style and improved accessibility.
:+1: well phrased. :+1: css.habitrpg.com Designers could post updates to a guild for collaborators & css beta testers, if nothing else. Alternatively, ask testers to subscribe to the github branch?
pushing updates to beta now
@benmanley Don't forget to claim your Bounty :)
The new stat bars design is surely more clear/readable, but in my super-humble opinion it doesn't look "an improvement" like the previous design...I feel like they want to bring me to the past more than bringing me in the game world. Maybe I just miss the sweet desaturated colors and the round corners - reading through your comments seems to be pretty normal to be scared about design choices, so please don't be offended! Anyway, if this becomes official, Stylish is here to heal all the disappointments :)
@Omnomnobot. Thanks for the feedback. Much as I liked my original design too, there were valid criticisms which the updated design addresses.
@lemoness Bounty!? :D
Great, I don't have space problems anymore :). Yes... I prefer the last version of rounded corners as well. I think they have a good compromise between old-school and modern styles.
@benmanley, maybe the beta subdomain is less pressurized enough, at least it should be. If the problem is the local development environment, I think the efforts to create and maintain another subdomain for CSS work would be better spent on making local development easier.
Kind of comparing apples and oranges there. The effort it would take to create and maintain a subdomain for CSS work is not comparable to the sweeping changes required for "making local development easier."

I am not saying that one option requires more effort than the other or that they require the same amount. I'm just expressing my opinion on where to put effort if the local development is a problem.
My point is that making local development less of a problem is a highly convoluted and difficult thing to do. It's desired, but would take a monumental amount of reshuffling and major changes.
The comment comes across quite a bit like "Well, rather than installing a filter in the water pump, we should replace the sewers."
We'd like to replace the sewers, but we'd also like clean drinking water before we can handle a project of that size.
Does it really require all this work you are saying? I was thinking about Vagrant or VM image. However, I can see Vagrant files in the repo now, so I am wondering what could be the problem (again: if the local development is a problem).
We have a Vagrant box (thanks to @thepeopleseason), but it still causes problems for some users and is still a rather large barrier.
Getting even simpler and making it an even smaller barrier would be a huge project, yes. A big part of it would be to get rid of the shared repo, which is planned... but a lot of work.

I just want to say that I disagree that it's not an improvement. The bars are cleaner, less cluttered, and look more "game-ish" to me than the bars before the desaturated bars. I like them a lot.

I also really like the new bars!!
However - I can't believe I didn't notice this before, and I am absolutely kicking myself over it - the level display rectangles are bigger now, and they actually block part of the mermaid tails and a bit of the octopus robe! Any way to make them smaller so that more of the art is visible? Can't believe I didn't double-check on that. So sorry for bringing this up so late in the game :(

Is there a reason the level indicators are always displayed? If not, we could change it so the levels are hidden most of the time, just as the party members' names are. That would also help to show off the backgrounds more - the poor little red crab in the beach scene was hidden even with the smaller level indicators. It's a bit of a shame to waste the background corner like that.
If we made that change, perhaps the level indicators would not need to be made smaller? I think hiding-until-hover would be an easier change than changing their size (but I'm sort of guessing here).
Also, what would you think of the player's own name being hidden-until-hover, just like the names of the party members? Again, that would show off the user's own background better, and the player knows who they are. :)

The player's name already hides until hover if they're mounted, so I can only imagine it wouldn't be hard to do that all the time.

Looks like there are some unnecessary
s that are making the default level label wider than it needs to be. Adding a margin to the buffed and reborn icons instead would help.
Also, we could dispense with “Lvl” and do this:
Apols to @Alys, but I favour this over displaying on hover for a couple of reasons:
Everyone knows their username, but they are less likely to know what level they are, or whether they are buffed. Both of these are things a user might want to check at a glance.
Using hover is problematic for mobile users. On an iPad, for example, the behaviour is rather strange – tapping the herobox triggers the hover state AND toggles between Tasks and User. Plus, the hover state is removed only when you navigate via the toolbar.
(On a side note, I think clicking on your avatar’s herobox should trigger the same modal you get when you select a party member, rather than toggling between Tasks and User.)
Finally, does rebirth need to show up in your herobox or only when your profile is being viewed by someone else? In other words, for bragging rights only.
@benmanley I think that this is a better solution as well, actually - I do like seeing everyone's levels (especially my own), and I don't think the "Lvl." is necessary. As a small comment, "buff" and "rebirth" might be easier to distinguish if the rebirth + is on the right side of the number and the buff stays on the left.... otherwise, I think that seems like a good option. I'd like to see some mock-ups of smaller and bigger levels to make sure that level 1 players don't have a level so small they'd mis it.

@benmanley Is this a good ticket to direct people to when they are sad about the mermaid tail being blocked, or is there a more active one that you'd prefer?
What if we put the player's level, buffs, etc under their mana bar (and moved the mana, XP, health bars up a bit to make room for it)? We could still have the level and buffs on the party avatars, and on the player's own avatar for consistency, but they could be invisible until hover since the player would now have another way to see their own level.
Having buffs under the mana bar would also give us more room to provide more detail if desired.
We also have some differences between site and mobile, like the toolbar not being sticky. What if it were possible to have the info always show up on mobile but only be on hover on computers? Wouldn't that fix the issue?

While I love the design of the new stats bars, they really clash with the art on the site. It looks really weird having super desaturated colors right next to my avatar.
