API documentation #44

Hi,

I'm wondering if there is a documentation for the format string for sending sessions to aircasting server. I think this is mostly dealt with here https://github.com/HabitatMap/AirCastingAndroidClient/blob/83c515601097ec3d7ef78879550c3b3148e244ba/arduino/aircasting/Airbeam2_Firmware_3_19_18/Airbeam2_Firmware_3_19_18.ino#L528

but I'd like to avoid reverse engineering this if there is a documentation somewhere (I couldn't find the info, but maybe I misread the projects file architecture).

My idea would be to send data directly from the sensor collecting platform directly to the servers without using the aircasting app.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Harold. Thanks for getting in touch. When you use the AB2 in "fixed-WiFi" or "fixed-cellular" mode this is how the platform works, i.e. the data is sent directly from the AB2 to the server without need for an Android device. In these instances, the Android device is only needed for the initial configuration. If you'd like your instrument to do the same, then it's the firmware you need to be copying, see https://github.com/HabitatMap/AirCastingAndroidClient/tree/master/arduino/aircasting/Airbeam2_Firmware_3_19_18

Feel free to follow up if you have additional questions.

Thanks for your answer.

I had noticed the direct sending, but I was thinking of collecting data with a raspberry and possibly sending session data using nodejs. So I guess my question is how do I form the http request to aircasting server so that it is properly understood.

Best

Your feedback will help create free tools for analyzing & visualizing air quality data

TAKE OUR SURVEY: https://forms.gle/XMUnpjhio4n7DSy47

HabitatMap is developing a website for analyzing and visualizing air quality data from low-cost instruments, like the AirBeam. The website will make it simple to upload air quality data, clean the data, compute summary statistics, facilitate comparisons between data sets, and visualize and export the results. The Air Quality Data Analysis Tools website will be free to access and all the code will be open-source.

Today, we are reaching out to members of the AirCasting community to get your opinion on what types of data cleaning, data processing, and data analysis tools would be most helpful in advancing your own air quality research and clean air education and advocacy work.

The survey takes approximately 5-15 minutes to complete. To ensure your valued feedback is incorporated into the development of the Air Quality Data Analysis Tools website, we kindly ask that you complete the survey by or before Tuesday, June 1st.

TAKE OUR SURVEY: https://forms.gle/XMUnpjhio4n7DSy47

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

To Improve Children's Health, Empower Communities Air quality is not normally one of the metrics taken into account by planners, architects, and developers when deciding what to build and where to build it but it should be. Knowing what the air quality is at a certain location at a certain time and being able to relate that to human activities, both in the immediate vicinity and farther afield, is important information. This is especially true when considering the health and well being of the most vulnerable among us - young children - who are all too frequently overlooked by those who maintain and improve the built environment of our cities.

Aircasting Actions: Free Air Quality Curriculum & Clean Air Campaign Guides

What will you do once you know what’s in your air? AirCasting Actions is a free resource for helping you and your community actively understand the air you're breathing and start taking action to improve it. Whether you’re a concerned individual or household, a community-based organization, or a teacher the AirCasting Actions digital toolkit has what you need to get started with air quality monitoring. Navigate to your focus area for guides, worksheets, inspiration, and activities to help inform and activate action plans for cleaner air.

VISIT WEBSITE https://aircastingactions.org/

TEACHERS If you are new to air quality monitoring, our plan builder will help you get started. The AirCasting Actions 6-step curriculum is designed to familiarize students with what particle pollution is and the importance of reducing and avoiding it. Students will plan and execute a day of observation and measurement using AirBeam air quality monitors. After completing their day in the field, students will report and discuss their findings in class. Depending on where you are and what the students find, the lesson can be extended to encourage the students take action and campaign for cleaner air. AirCasting Actions is intended to inspire and nurture the next generation of civically engaged community scientists.

BUILD CURRICULUM https://aircastingactions.org/teachers-build-curriculum/

NON-PROFITS We know that pollution is a problem everywhere, but some communities bear the brunt. Social inequality and systemic racism lead to discrimination in access to safe and adequate housing and land use planning that concentrates polluting infrastructures and facilities in marginalized communities. Low-cost air quality monitors and free resources like our campaign builder offer a solution. Equipped with AirBeams and these downloadable resources, concerned communities and non-profits can measure particulate matter on a hyperlocal scale, collecting quality data to build a case for change.

BUILD CAMPAIGN https://aircastingactions.org/non-profits-build-campaign/

INDIVIDUALS Feeling helpless about the state of our environment? Don’t! Now that you’re taking AirCasting Actions you are empowering yourself and others with information that can have a big impact on the health of your community. Government and regulatory agencies throughout the world rely on networks of fixed-site monitors to measure air quality and evaluate compliance with air quality standards. Unfortunately, they are expensive and in turn, few and far between. Since concentrations of microscopic air pollutants can fluctuate drastically over short distances and time periods, government air quality monitoring networks…well… aren’t giving you the full picture. Recording hyperlocal air quality data, block-by-block, and second-to-second, can give you the information you need to actually improve the air you breathe!

$100 Off AirBeam3 When You Purchase Today Using Code SAVE100

HabitatMap is headquartered in Brooklyn, so like the rest of NYC and a huge chunk of the East Coast and Midwest, we've borne witness to the apocalyptic rainbow sky caused by smoke from Canadian wildfires. Research indicates the number of people exposed to toxic pollution from wildfires at least one day a year increased 27-fold between 2006 and 2020 and an estimated 60 percent of the smoke impact of American wildfires is experienced by those living outside the states where the trees are in flames. The growing frequency and intensity of wildfires around the world is the direct result of burning fossil fuels. Today we're offering $100 off the AirBeam3 air monitor using the code SAVE100 to make it more accessible for folks to monitor their personal exposures to air pollution and take avoidance actions.

GET AIRBEAM https://www.habitatmap.org/airbeam/buy-it-now

Pass the Climate and Community Protection Fund & NY HEAT Act

Avoiding pollution doesn't address the root cause. We need our elected officials to stand up to the fossil fuel industry and pass laws that will protect our health and advance environmental justice. Please take a moment today to call NY’s Legislative Leadership and demand they pass the Climate and Community Protection Fund and NY HEAT Act. These bills will invest in communities on the frontlines of environmental injustice and the climate crisis and empower the NY Public Service Commission to guide utilities towards pollution-free, cost-effective energy sources, instead of relying on fossil gas.

Measure & Map Air Pollution for Only $99 HabitatMap is pleased to introduce AirBeam Mini! Our fourth version of the AirBeam, the Mini was specifically designed to be small, lightweight and affordable at just $99. HabitatMap’s mission is to make recording, visualization and sharing of valid, accurate air quality measurements accessible to the communities most impacted by poor air quality by creating free, low-cost and open-source software and hardware. AirBeam Mini is the culmination of more than a decade spent working with grassroots groups to support them as they endeavor to clear the air.

(Huge thanks to the Clean Air Fund [https://www.cleanairfund.org/] which made this work possible.) In addition, we’ve added air quality data for thousands of stations across the US and around the world to the AirCasting platform by importing US EPA’s AirNow data for PM2.5, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide. Note that you can follow these stations via the AirCasting app and set threshold alerts so you can stay informed and take action when air quality is poor.
