jacquelineIO commented 8 years ago

Here is what I have so far. Two platforms one is symposium. It looks like it available from pinax but Pycon is using it if you want to see it in action. AND the source is available on github. PYCON (obviously python) https://us.pycon.org/2016/ -- the pycon website https://github.com/PyCon/pycon

https://github.com/pinax/pinax-project-symposion http://pinaxproject.com/pinax/

Looks like another one out there is this OSEM. It's in Ruby. Another one that is opensource (ruby) http://osem.io/

elijahlofgren commented 8 years ago

Thanks Jacqueline! Here's the readme for symposium: https://github.com/pinax/symposion/blob/master/README.rst

I found a NodeJS based conference project called We.js events

I see a deploy to heroku button so looks like we.js may be easy to deploy there.

elijahlofgren commented 8 years ago

I am very optimistic that We.js events could meet our needs after finding this demo video of it: start watching at 1:38 to see sessions and speakers being entered: http://youtu.be/h31Cl9uD4uU (No headphones needed as this is a silent video).

elijahlofgren commented 8 years ago

@jacquelineflemming As the delivery lead, I propose you be the one to make the final decision on what platform we should use. I'm good with python or nodejs.

@wohlford what are your thoughts?

wohlford commented 8 years ago

I like @jacquelineflemming first suggestion. My mind keeps coming back to the Guidebook. I think it's a best of class solution and in the limited time we have, it's the easiest way to get er' done.

All these other solutions, albeit probably great ones, say "learning curve" to me. I think with the time we have, most of it needs to be spent in adding content. It may very well be possible to do one of these other systems, but I still keep coming back to Guidebook.

Guidebook's Plus option, is about two grand. I'm sure none of us have that lying around, but I bet it wouldn't be too difficult to get a single sponsor to foot the bill. It's a significant enough conference with enough monied vendors to find one. Heck, there might even be some left over money tied up in the conference itself that we could directly ask the conference admins. If we could get enough sponsors on board, we could splurge for the Premium version which includes a sponsorship addon specifically.

@netelysis does such sponsorship conflict with CfA?

And does anyone have sponsorship connections? Anyone by chance know conference admins? I have a couple of contacts that happen to be mutual friends with Boyd.

Finally, how do we get the word out? If we make an app, what's the idea on making people aware there's this awesome app everyone really needs to use?

elijahlofgren commented 8 years ago

@wohlford +1 I like the consulting mindset, only need custom if best solution for constraints. I was worried about app store review time but it looks like it may actually be just a 1 day wait according to http://appreviewtimes.com

So please allow an email, mailing list aficionado to become accustomed to having to log into a system to communicate with a group of individuals. 8^)

I was curious, did we revert back to the idea of creating a native app instead of focusing upon a platform agnostic web portal?

Concerning @wohlford inquiry, CfA does allow sponsorships but due to the way that the management of AFITC is structured we may want to rethink the concept of

"there might even be some left over money tied up in the conference itself that we could directly ask the conference admins"

If the $2k does become available somehow the question becomes how much additional mileage can be gained through the management of other conferences, events, venue management, etc that are held and exist within the region?

If the portal/app is developed I do believe that we would have a captive audience and very strong channels among members of the City of Montgomery leadership, chamber leadership and the US Air Force.

Test reply from email - Boyd, you should automatically receive emails from GitHub for issues where you are assigned, perhaps check your spam filter and your settings at https://github.com/settings/notifications ?

We were planning on platform agnostic web portal until @wohlford suggested the native route.

I believe, that $2k will be for a "one-time use" app as the pricing is "$1,750 / guide" - per guide so we could only use it for 1 conference without paying $2K again.

Cheers, Elijah

Ok, so we have 4 options so far: Needs customizing: CUSTOM DEV NEEDED:

Off-the-shelf: NO DEV NEEDED?:

If the conference admins don't want to go with the off the shelf option, I propose we go with symposium as it appears to have a more robust feature set for organizing a conference and nicely displaying the schedule than We.js Events - see this example: https://us.pycon.org/2016/schedule/talks/

What does the rest of the team think?

elijahlofgren commented 8 years ago

I've confirmed that We.js events doesn't have a concurrent session display that is anywhere as nice as symposium, you can see this on the test We.js instance I have running here (am trying it out for a different project): https://afternoon-peak-30977.herokuapp.com/event/2

@netelysis, I consider them the same in concept. The technical details make the difference.

@netelysis, this is a very good point. Ty.

Still concerned about timeframe.

wohlford commented 8 years ago

@elijahlofgren, I'm going to rely on your descriptions above. I'm afraid I'm in the middle of a move and have little time to do more. Also, I like Python. 😀

So for my vote based on scant information and time limitations is Symposium. 😀

I don't know Pinax (or Drupal), but both are mature projects and trust the documentation to be sufficient. I would also guess several of the underlying pieces to use tech and methods most experienced programmers could pick up quickly.

jacquelineIO commented 8 years ago

Hi guys, Sorry for the S L O W response. I was up last night looking at Symposium and trying to get an instance to run on my laptop. Unfortunately, I was running into a dependency's error within the package itself :( but I'm going try again tonight. I don't have a preference I don't think, but I think if I can get symposium off the ground tonight/tomorrow we should try that (given the input from everyone here). Once we have the information, since @elijahlofgren has already stood up we.js we can always revert to that if necessary. Pinax also has a slack account that we can join if we need help or have questions. I plan to explore that option. This dependency issue seems trivial so I don't expect it to be a hold up.

elijahlofgren commented 8 years ago

👍 Sounds like a great plan!

Yes, I tried to setup Symposium last night too. Found a vagrant file, but it only works for virtualbox as a provider. Since I'm using VMware Fusion it didn't like me. Maybe @jacquelineflemming or @elijahlofgren can use to try it out.

elijahlofgren commented 8 years ago

I just tried to set it up as well and couldn't get past an "ImportError: No module named boxes" error.

jacquelineIO commented 8 years ago

OK, so I have made some progress in getting a local install going. After realizing djangocon probably uses symposiom as well I went to their site and presto, looks like that repo for symposiom has been abandoned and they have moved on to pinaxcon which is still using symposiom.

djangcon site it: https://2016.djangocon.us/

pinaxcon https://github.com/pinax/PinaxCon

This should get you up and running. I haven't jumped on the Pinax Slack yet, but I'm hoping that will be a good resource.

What would also be a good resource is to download pycon or djangocon sites to have some reference points.

Thanks @jacquelineflemming! 🎉

At first, it wasn't clear to me when presented with "Make sure you are using a virtual environment of some sort (e.g. virtualenv or pyenv)." but here's how to do that in case it saves anyone a bit of time:

virtualenv afitcvirtualenv
cd afitcvirtualenv/
source bin/activate

So, has the team made a final decision as to whether or not the AFITC app/web portal is a project that we are will to take or is the delivery time-table much too aggressive? I will await the respective responses to determine the general consensus.

Good Evening Elijah,

I’m Kelvin Warren, President of Central Montgomery Optimist Club (CMOC). As promised, here is some information on CMOC and what we do. So you are wondering, What is Optimist International? Optimist International is a Non-profit Organization providing hope and positive vision, Optimist bring out the best in youth, our communities and ourselves. These are some of the local projects CMOC is engaged in:

Annual Youth Conference – the Optimist Club honors students for their accomplishments they are doing for their community

_Communication Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (_CCDHH) Contest – Students who are certified to have a hearing loss of 40 decibels or more may compete in this contest designed to help them develop the skills and confidence to present in sign or orally to an audience

CMOC Oratorical Contest – This contest is designed to assist youth in gaining public speaking experience and provide them with an opportunity to compete for a scholarship.

Learning Enhancement Program (LEP)

Aid to Inmate Mothers (AIM) – We assist in providing services to Alabama’s incarcerated women with emphasis on enhancing personal growth and strengthening the bonds between inmate mothers and their children.

Pack-a-Purse Program – We collect purses and personal care items for inmate mothers incarcerated. This allows the mothers to have basic necessities and something of their own that can be used again and again.

What is the timeline requirement?

If there is a need for a data structure behind the site, then I can use our ADOM technology to quickly have a fully functional SQL data-to-JSON Middle-Tier up and running. I could also provide our HTML5/Twitter Bootstrap project framework to speed up dev. Would probably just need a 4-hour session with one of my developers to get anyone interested up to speed. We also have some pretty good documentation (WHAT??? ;)) on the framework which will help in the initial stages.

Thanks, Larry

So. What are we trying to accomplish here? I was waiting until tonight tomorrow to send this, I had to read up on starting up the postgresql database in heroku, I was able read on it some today and I think I good on it, but now for the real test. I have already put the start code on heroku under my personal account as a test, but I need the DB created in heroku-speak so that the app can run.

So back to my question. AFITC has a site, with the rooms listed. I thought that was the major goal. I'm for using Symposion framework. I think the only major problem is the framework doesn't appear to be mobile friendly. Which was my hope to skip trying to do a mobile app, which would take some time. So if that's the goal, can someone take the time to make CSS and/or JS mobile ready? Maybe that's where Larry can pitch in a developer. Thanks for that offer Larry!!

So what is the main site missing that we are trying to fill a gap for? http://www.afitc-event.com

Time willing with baby, I will be updating you all again tonight. :)

elijahlofgren commented 8 years ago

Boyd, Last I remember going to http://www.afitc-event.com/agenda/ only had a PDF download option, now it appears to have an agenda view that isn't PDF? I am also curious to hear how you envision our afitc mobile ready web solution to differ from this? Perhaps they ended up adding functionality to the website since we embarked on this project?

Thanks!

jacquelineIO commented 8 years ago

Thanks @elijahlofgren I couldn't remember what is was that we were going after.

So I have deployed the PinaxCon template. The database is able to be updated by accessing https://enigmatic-depths-30457.herokuapp.com/admin/ I have created accounts for you. I will send an email with the login info.

Then you can go to https://enigmatic-depths-30457.herokuapp.com/ and see the updates and use the application.

Currently I have DEBUG turned on so you will see **it hit the fan if something goes wrong :) enjoy. So my thinking is if we want to go with this we can get someone or some help and have a responsive mobile site via CSS/JS.

jacquelineIO commented 8 years ago

On second thiight it might already be responsive...

netelysis commented 8 years ago

Hello All!

Any updates on AFITC and if there is work that we can still do for the site? Have you gotten a chance to add some data to the site and see how it works and if we like it? I can also add collaborators and you can pull the code if you wish for your own reviewing/hacking endeavors.

Also Elijah, I like the idea, I would say we should try to make doc/site for projects and vote or prioritize what we can and should work on!! If we get the PinaxCon site going, I also noticed there is a proposal/review section where you can vote on proposals; I don't know if this will be useful to do something like that for but seems cool to think about.

-thanks, jacquie

I'd like to propose making a website for this chapter as a project that we consider. This should hopefully be a pretty basic website but very helpful for people interested in potentially joining the club.

Thanks!

Jacqueline, I haven't had a chance to try it out yet but I am hoping to spend a couple hours on Saturday. Thanks for getting it set up!

Boyd,

As our "requirements" person for this project could you outline what we are trying to accomplish that will be different from http://www.afitc-event.com/agenda/ - this page renders just fine on my iPhone so I am having trouble seeing how what problem we might be solving, could you shed some light on this?

Thanks!

Sir Lofgren/Sis Jacqueline:

You both have expressed a need for me to more fully define the requirements for the AFITC portal/app. Each of you have accurately expressed the fact that the current conference agenda renders/displays just fine on your mobile devices and I do understand your posture(s) in this area. What makes for a more interesting conversation is when one considers, in additional to having an agenda that can be easily changed and adjusted in real time, having a web portal/app that

I do understand with the current time crunch that not much, if any, of this is possible but these are the sorts of items that I had in mind when I initially mentioned a AFITC Conference management portal/app. It may be best to shelf this item for the current year's conference and move on to Lofgren's non-profit web-site proposal.

I hope that my explanation helps.

Boyd,

This helps immensely, thanks! With the clarification that the value we're primarily trying to bring is not necessarily just the schedule but something like the "The Unofficial AFITC After-Conference" web app could allow us to pivot to not even necessarily trying to become the system of record for official conference events but primarily the place everyone knows go for most other things as you've listed above. I would still like to try to aim to ship something, even if it stays in the "unofficial" category. Perhaps we can see what progress is made this weekend and make a final go/no go decision at our meeting on Tuesday?

jacquelineIO commented 8 years ago

Sounds good to me! I think we can knock some of this stuff out.

elijahlofgren commented 8 years ago

It took me a bit to figure out how to add a new page to the main menu, turns out it is pretty simple, I edited the "Documentation" section of the README here with instructions: https://github.com/HackMGM/afitc-conf-app#documentation

Example page I added with embedded custom google map: https://enigmatic-depths-30457.herokuapp.com/food/
