Explain the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation

Extrinsic motivation is a motivation fueled by feeling the requirement to do something or craving the reward that comes out of doing it. In contrast, intrinsic motivation happens through understanding the benefits to oneself to do the task at hand, that executing the objective will bring the person closer to personal goals.

What factors make a student find an activity as interesting and engages in it?

A student should expect and feel confident that they can execute the activity, e.g., they should be competent for the task at hand. The activity yields some value or is relevant to the student's future goals, e.g., the student learns something from it. The cost of engaging in the activity should not be too high, so the required attention can be sustained, e.g., it can't take up too much time. They should be given the required autonomy to perform the activity and be supported by a feeling of relatedness. Able to do their own thing but feel supported by a community or network.

In my own words, an activity should match the students' skill, it should help them move forward and you as a teacher should provide adequate support and create a good environment for its execution.

How can we use the Model of Intrinsic Motivation when teaching or helping students? Do you think it can help?

The analogy that pops up in my head to explain this is the difference between dragging someone up the hill or giving a little push and guide the person down the hill. An intrinsically motivated student is the one going down the hill. It feels a lot more fun and fulfilling to the student. You created the environment as a teacher so the student will keep going forever even the teacher or coach leaves.

Out of the different motivation strategies, which resonates the most with you and why?

Relatedness, doing something alone is hard for me. I need to see peers perform to make sure I have a support structure for questions and concerns to see that other people are able to do things I might be struggling with.
