Resolves #175. Would love to take this in the 7.9.1 release if possible.

Coverage remained the same at 63.222% when pulling 8f19dab39e5a9b9f0e4e31b49a66fd6085704de7 on fnothaft:issues/175-extensions into 0c547153748237721fce093de33a44498ded0e6f on HadoopGenomics:master.

@tomwhite SGTM! We can override the behavior downstream in ADAM, so don't hold up 7.9.1 for this patch.
